In the Beginning God — Part 7
It is profoundly sobering to fully consider that one man’s transgression brought death to all mankind from the beginning unto this day and beyond to the day when Jesus returns and the day of the final judgment when death will be swallowed up in victory.
When Adam and Eve had finished passing responsibility to another, other than themselves, God passed sentence on them for their disobedience.
“So the Lord God said to the serpent: ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.’ " Genesis 3:14-15
The serpent was the same spirit that had been expelled from Heaven when he attempted to establish himself higher than God and took a third of the angels with him in his rebellion. [See Isaiah 14:12-19; Ezekiel 28:12-19] By lying to and deceiving Eve he was ultimately responsible for introducing doubt and disobedience in the heart of mankind. Therefor he receives the greatest condemnation, the greater and most lasting curse.
“To the woman He said: ‘I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth children; your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.’ " Genesis 3:16
Eve’s joy in child bearing is turned to multiplied sorrow and pain. Her equality with her husband was reduced to servitude and submission to the will of her husband. And this was the role of every woman until the day Jesus came preaching freedom to the captives. Moreover, in His death, burial and resurrection He established a better covenant, which erased the inequality of men and women and made us all one in Him.
“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:28-29
Because she chose to submit herself to the serpent and followed him rather than God, she was made to submit to her husband without the right to establish her own choices without his approval. She sold her equality with man and her independence to make her own choices for a desire to be what she was already and didn’t acknowledge because she was blinded by lust for what was forbidden for her to see.
"Then to Adam He said, ‘Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, “You shall not eat of it”: Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3:17-19
