Don’t Let The Bews* Get You Down
“Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.” Mark 4:24
Hearing is a choice in the same way that what we say is a choice. Hearing the Word does not mean merely audible perception so much as deliberate focus and meditation on what is being heard. Now, all sound has meaning and can stimulate thoughts and images in the mind.
“There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.” 1 Corinthians 14:10
But hearing audibly by itself has only a minimal effect on us, and that only over an extended period of time. Advertisers understand the principle so they spend millions on ads and jingles that will convince you over time to buy their products. Even when you don’t have a need for something the ads heard over and over again creates the need in your mind and you are convinced you have to have whatever is being promoted through the Ad. So, eventually you buy it.
If we are living on a diet of hearing nothing but the sensational reporting of strife, wars, murders, atrocities against one group over another, the latest tragedies against the innocent and the apparent evidence to claim the triumph of evil over good, then we will be enforcing upheaval and turmoil in our lives. Our souls will be constantly strained by the thoughts of things that keep us agitated, angry, tense and stressed, all of which can lead to sickness and disease in our bodies, not to mention the number of those around us whose lives we infest with our angst, negativism and stress.
On the other hand when we choose to limit the measure of “news” we consume and expand the measure of the WORD we feed on, then our lives will be full of life, God’s life inherent in His Word. It is far more beneficial to us, to our wellbeing and overall health to fill our days with meditation in the Word of God than to be constantly stirred up by the rehearsal of the works of the devil.
By God’s Word we increase our wisdom and knowledge concerning all things, by it we strengthen our faith, by it we are comforted concerning the future, by it we receive the strategies for dealing with and responding to the threats of the evil one and by declaration of the Word we thwart his plans before they can manifest.
What we hear in abundance will determine the measure by which we receive more, more life or more death. The more of the life of Jesus we have by His Word in us the more life we make available to us to rest in faith and hope in Him no matter the circumstances around us. By contrast the more of the works of the evil one we have in our hearts and in our minds the more we increase our capacity for those things that rob us of peace and bring only turmoil and unrest.
When we walk in the spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. In other words, walking in the Word is walking in the Spirit, knowing and doing what pleases God our Father. To walk in the Spirit is to be in close communion and continual fellowship with Jesus, letting Him guide our affairs and direct our lives, listening always for His voice. When we are in His will there is no room for anything else. The works of darkness have no place in us neither are we overwhelmed or taken by surprise with his temptations to fear, feel helpless or defeated in the face of all the evil works seemingly going unchecked in the culture.
Our peace will not be found in the ever-increasing aggravation with the works of darkness, but with the willful submission of our hearts, our hearing and our attention to the presence of Jesus in our lives, by His Word.
God wants us at peace and living our lives in joy and fulfillment of purpose, not tormented daily by the noise of distraction.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
