Who is on the Lord’s side?
“Who is on the LORD’S side?” Exodus 32:26
Moses had gone up in the mountain for 40 days while the children of Israel waited at the foot of the mountain in the wilderness. They were told to wait until Moses returned with further instructions from the LORD.
God had just miraculously delivered them out of the bondage of the Pharaoh in Egypt. He had put a pillar of fire between them and the Egyptians all night so that the Egyptians could not pursue them. He parted the waters and led them through the Red Sea on dry land while the waters stood up on both sides.
And when the Egyptians came after them the waters returned to their place and all the Egyptian army, men, horses and chariots drowned in the Sea. Now with all the provisions they brought out of Egypt, horses, flocks and herds and many cattle; and from the Egyptians, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, the Israelites had plenty to eat and all the provision that they needed, they only had to rest and wait to hear from the LORD. They were free from slavery.
They had no taskmasters ordering their days. They could choose to do whatever they wanted to do. They only had to wait for a WORD from God before moving on into the land that was promised to them, a land flowing with milk and honey, a fertile and good land where they could flourish and prosper and establish themselves as a strong and mighty people of God, Who delivered them and provided for them even in the wilderness.
But there were among them those who were of an evil heart. Those who did not honor God nor value the freedom He had gained for them. They forgot the supernatural events to which they themselves were eyewitnesses. They forgot the great relief and joy they experienced when at last they were free to leave the chains of slavery and walk as a free people led by the mighty hand of God Himself.
They forgot the tears of generations after generations praying, hoping and crying out to God for a deliverer. They even forgot the miracle of the pillar of cloud that led them by day and the pillar of fire that protected and illuminated their camp by night. They forgot the miracle at the Red Sea when the waters parted and they walked over on dry ground. And they forgot how the Egyptians drowned in the same water through which a pathway had been made for their journey to freedom.
They forgot, and many turned to the ways of their captors and made for themselves a golden idol and worshiped it, reveling in every kind of lewd and degrading behavior, not willing to wait on the Lord, their Deliverer.
When Moses comes down out of the mountain with the Ten Commandments and finds the people dancing and reveling in debauchery and abomination before a golden calf the anger of God began to burn in his heart and he said to them, “Who is on the LORD’S side?”
It seems an odd question considering all that was going on. But not everyone was engaging in the ungodly celebration. But more importantly God was giving all of them the opportunity to make a final and eternal choice for their lives.
There was a battle going on in the spirit realm and two sides were at war, God against the spirit of the false gods of Egypt, light warring against darkness, Good warring against evil and Life warring against death. It was God’s side or the devil’s side. Make your choice.
Everyday we have choices to make. Will we stand with God or will we oppose Him and side with the devil. God’s position is clear. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.
“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” Malachi 3:6
The world, the common culture, is taking its stand against God and against His people more boldly and violently everyday. And we stand at a crossroads everyday to choose the path of righteousness or walk the path that leads to death.
The broad path that leads to death is filled with well-wishers and glad-handers, pleasure seekers, lovers of self rather than lovers of God. These are all dead souls who adorn the outward appearance to show their way to be reasonable, acceptable, harmless, attractive and life fulfilling, but in truth it is death and nothing less.
The narrow path that leads to life is simple, straight-forward and filled with people who are on the same journey, who walk together in faith looking to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. It is a path of righteousness that has the poor, the rich, the broken, the wounded, the weak, the strong, the healed, the sick, the heartbroken and the weary, the strong and the faithful all walking together caring not for their circumstance in this life but looking for the glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ and their transformation into His likeness.
Who’s side are you on?
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9
This is our calling. We are God’s royal priesthood. We are a Holy nation. Praising God is our purpose all the days of our lives.
