What Makes God Laugh?
It the shortest verse in the Scriptures, John 11:35, “Jesus wept” we learn that God expresses deep emotions. But have you ever thought about what makes God laugh?
When I was growing up I never heard anything about God even having a sense of humor. Somewhere along the way I must have heard something about Him welcoming little children, so I guess I thought He had a cheerful face that would be attractive to children, but laugh? I’m not so sure.
The truth is God does laugh. He laughs at the futility of men to presume they can outwit, out power, out love and even “out-wise” Him. Ok, “out-wise” is not a word but you get my point. God laughs at those who think they know better than God, and all they have to do is to get rid of Jesus and they can take over the world. The rebellious unbeliever who seeks to dismiss God and all references to Him in the culture is counted among those who cause God to laugh. But God’s laughter is not frivolity. After all, He is God. When God laughs at the devil or his minions it is a prelude to His wrath to come upon them.
“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.” Psalm 1:5
The psalmist put the spotlight on the heart of the matter. Evil is determined to divide the believers from fellowship with God and with one another, to deceive them into accepting false claims about God and themselves and ultimately establish its kingdom in place of God’s. But that notion to God is laughable.
“The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.” Psalm 37:12-15
When our Father laughs we too can laugh. We can laugh in the face of the vain, empty threats of the evil one. We can laugh at all of his instruments of evil because the weapons of our warfare are far superior to his, because they are God’s weapons.
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11
And not only that, but greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world.
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
While we live in the world we are in warfare, spiritual warfare, but in the end all things will be restored, even death will be swallowed up in victory.
“So, when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” 1 Corinthians 15:54
But, today and everyday we have the opportunity to face-off with evil by laughing at it as God laughs at it, knowing it will be judged and put down once and for all, never to trouble the children of God again for all eternity. Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. [Psalm 30:5] And our light affliction [2Cor. 4:18] eventually fosters an exceeding measure of glory for us. But the one who causes the affliction will reap the reward of his work and when we see it we, with God will laugh at him. [Isaiah 14; Luke 6:21]
Finally, laughter is a function of a merry heart and a merry heart does good like a medicine. [Proverbs 17:22]
