Power To Tread On

“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19

We hear of things everyday that trouble our hearts and minds, things that disturb and threaten our peace and our sense of reasonable security. These are troubling times indeed. But I would offer you this perspective. When have there not been troubling times? Think about Herod ordering the slaughter of all Jewish children two years old and younger at the time of Jesus‘ birth. Then there are the masses of people who have died as the result of plagues, wars, natural disasters, earthquakes, hurricanes, tidal waves, floods and pestilences. Far too many have been martyred for their faith in Jesus Christ and too many have suffered and to this day are suffering cruel and brutal persecution at the hand of those Who hate God and hate His church, the believers in Jesus Christ.

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” Matthew 24:6

The source of all these things is the work of the enemy of God, the devil. And the world and most its inhabitants have still not heard the message of salvation in Jesus Christ that transforms lives from death to life. The works of the devil were clear to Jesus and He came to destroy them, and He did.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour…” 1 Peter 5:8

“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” 2 Corinthians. 2:11

The power to tread on serpents and scorpions is not so much about stepping on snakes and poisonous arachnids, though that is certainly included in the meaning. More significantly it is the power to dominate and thwart the influence and activity of the evil one in this present world.

Yes, Jesus has defeated and him and taken away is power to just take over someone’s life without their cooperation.

Consider this.

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:12-23

The authority we have now is confirmed by Jesus and it is indeed His authority by which we speak and act particularly in the face of evil in the world. You want to know what the devil is doing in the world? Listen to the daily 24-7 “news.” But we need not be overwhelmed or overtaken by him in any area of our lives. We are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The devil has no right to rob us of any of the promises of God to us. Therefore, In Jesus’ death and resurrection the power of the devil over us was broken for all time to come. But while we are in the world we must arm ourselves in order to resist him and defeat his efforts to kill, steal and to destroy.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

Until he is finally put down and cast into hell we must contend with him, but not on equal footing. Because of Jesus Christ our Lord we contend with evil with greater and more powerful weapons than he could ever resist.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; and having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” 2 Corinthians 10:4-6

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11

“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13

God’s armor is designed to defeat the devil where he exists, at the source, in the realm of the spirit. God is Spirit, His Words are Spirit, and we have both resident in us now. When we speak and declare His words by faith in the name of Jesus, there is nothing the devil can do but relinquish his hold on anything he has stolen, imprisoned or destroyed and by the authority of God’s word he must restore what he has ruined.

The devil has no claim on us now that we are forgiven and born again by the power of God. So we can, and indeed we must, tread on him and all his power in order to bring the Word of life, the good news, to the world.

God’s intent is that we be protected from the works of evil and nothing the enemy does will hurt us.

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19
