Isaiah 45— Part 3 — God is God Alone
“For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.” Isaiah 45:4-6
Cyrus was not a Jew, not a son of Jacob (Israel). He was not included in the covenants of Israel. He was a gentile king whom God chose to be His instrument of judgment against Belshazzar and Babylon the center of the pagan world. He was anointed by God to carry out His purpose, and Cyrus’ obedience resulted in great blessings of riches and wealth to him.
God chose him deliberately, not randomly. He called him by name. That is, He called him particularly for a Holy purpose and empowered him to accomplish it according to God’s eternal plan and to establish His unique and exclusive authority and sovereignty as God and God alone.
“I girded thee, though thou hast not known me…”
God equipped and protected Cyrus even though Cyrus did not know who He was. God girded Cyrus in that He surrounded him and equipped him for battle. Cyrus would capture Babylon and restore to Israel the vessels of the Temple “which Nebuchadnezzar had brought from Jerusalem and had put them in the house of his gods.” [Ezra 1:7] Cyrus would initiate the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. [Ezra 5:13]
The poetry and imagery of the Bible is exquisite. “from the rising of the son and from the west…” is to say, from the east to the west, over the whole compass of the earth, every living person will know that God alone is God the LORD.
“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:10-11
What a comfort and assurance of our peace and safety, of our provision and healing, of our hope and earnest expectation, that God, Our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God of Love is God alone and is our God.
The enormity of the magnitude of God’s love is an incomprehensible assurance that we have a Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord, Who is our Lord and our High Priest and Advocate, our peace, our strength and our joy, now and forever.
