Isaiah 45 — Part 4 — God Rules Over All
“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the Lord have created it.” Isaiah 45:7-8
All things that were created were created by God and He alone is in control of all of it. The only thing He chooses not to control is the will of man. Gad has given man absolutely free will to choose his way, choose his will, choose his destiny.
“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: that thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” Deuteronomy 30:19-20
All of creation is under God’s exclusive dominion and authority. Light and darkness peace and evil are in His power.
“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: KJV
“I form light, I create darkness; I make well-being, I create woe; I, ADONAI, do all these things.” Isaiah 45:7 The Complete Jewish Bible
“The One forming light and creating darkness; causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these.” Isaiah 45:7 NASB
The idea that God, who is good and who declared all things that He created to be good, would also be the Creator of evil is difficult to reconcile on the face of it. That attribute is more generally associated with the devil, whose name contains the very word. But evil in the context of God as Sovereign Creator is not contrary to His goodness in this sense. Evil and calamity as judgment against unrighteousness is consistent with God’s justice. In this sense evil is in God’s authority to allow or withhold at His will.
God created Lucifer an Angel of Light. He was perfect “until iniquity was found in him.”
“You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.” Ezek. 28:15
God created Adam, male and female and it was very good until Adam disobeyed and brought death (evil) over all the earth (all creation).
The message here is that God in His sovereignty brings good or calamity according to His will. He alone also can command righteousness to flow down from the skies and the earth to open up to receive it and together they bring forth salvation.
“Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together.”
The imagery in this passage is a picture of the birth of Jesus where Heaven (The Holy Spirit) and earth (The Virgin Mary) meet in bringing forth the Savior of the world. It is God’s will and it is God’s creation.
Everything in God’s purpose and plan is deliberate, intentional and never random or subject to chance or whim as with men. God knows the end from the beginning and He has ordained and knows every step along the way. He establishes kingdoms and He brings them down.
The foolishness of men leads them to strut about and boast in their pride and arrogance. They set themselves as kings and rulers, they threaten with their puny weapons of their hands, not realizing that God can destroy them and their weapons of violence with a thought. The liars shout their vitriol without regard for the pain and anxiety they cause but they are only setting themselves up for a great fall. The wicked rule over the people by fear and harsh injustice but they will not prevail and their days are not long.
But the righteous, the people of God have only joy set before them.
“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” Proverbs 29:2
“Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.” Psalm 37:1
We who are called the righteous, the Church, the Body of Christ spend our lives in doing good, in seeking God and living to be a blessing to all. We are God’s ambassadors of love and reconciliation. We are His ministers of peace.
“A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.” Psalm 112:5-7
