Keys Of The Kingdom — Part 1
May 5 — Keys Of The Kingdom
“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:19
We’ve all had it happen to us at one time or another. We put a familiar key in a lock just as we have done hundreds if not thousands of times. But this time it will not turn the lock. Try as we might it will not unlock the door. We take the key out and look more closely at it and realize it’s the wrong key. It has the right shape and size but the teeth are not right for the lock we’re trying to open. It was similar in many ways in color in shale in size but it was not the right key.
There are two people that have the key to my house, my housekeeper and me. By it we share equal access to my house.
There are other keys that I have that I share with other people, the keys to the church to my office, to various doors and rooms in the Music Ministry suite. There are keys that only I have for my use, my car, my safe deposit box, and so forth.
Keys play a fundamentally important function in my daily life. Some I use everyday, some more then once a day and some only occasionally. In every case, however, without the right key in the right lock I cannot get access to all that is rightfully mine. Any keys will not do. Keys not associated with the door I need to open will not give me access, no matter how I might try to twist, turn or jiggle them.
The keys of the Kingdom of Heaven are much the same. They are not random or interchangeable. They are as precisely fashioned to fulfill God’s intended purpose, as are all things in Creation. By define design they are meant to be applied to circumstances and situations in our lives to give us access to life and that more abundantly.
The first key of the Kingdom is the knowledge that Jesus Christ Is Lord. Equally important is faith, because without faith it is impossible to please God.
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
Faith is the first and most fundamental key to the Kingdom of Heaven because all other keys depend on it. Faith opens the first door, that is, by grace we are saved through faith. Everything in the Kingdom of God rests on this. Now, having been saved through faith in Jesus Christ we have access to all that God has created for His pleasure. Receiving Jesus as Lord is the central Key.
“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” Romans 8:32
Now, Jesus has shown us what the Kingdom of Heaven is like. In Him we are not only in the kingdom of Heaven, but the Kingdom is also within us.
