Keys Of The Kingdom — Part 3
“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:19
The keys of the Kingdom of Heaven are for locking things and opening things, for confining and for setting free, for binding and loosing. “Whatsoever you bind on earth is bound in Heaven.” What does this mean? Do we have influence on things in Heaven? Can we change the condition of things in Heaven by what we do on the earth? It would seem so at first impression. But, there is a more practical, truer application of this passage.
In matters of official acts, in particular Holy covenants and contracts, the church is given the authority to confirm (affirm) relationships on earth that are then recorded in Heaven. Marriage, for example, is a binding covenant between a man and a woman to honor God and stand as a symbol of the union between Christ and the Church. And the record of that covenant is recorded and affirmed in Heaven, with God’s blessing. Oaths that we make on earth are taken seriously by our Father in Heaven.
Our words bind us a surely as they can set us free. They have enormous power to affect our lives for good or for evil.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21
When we speak the Words of God we come into agreement with the Words of Heaven so that what we bind on earth by the Word of God is what is also bound in Heaven. The key (no pun intended) to understanding binding and loosing is this, the keys are the Words of God that declare life, liberty and peace.
The keys of the Kingdom Heaven are tied to the authority and privilege of binding and loosing. It is not about human whim or capricious utterances with no power to back them up. It is about exercising the power and authority Jesus has given to us by the Power of the Holy Spirit working in us to restore godly order and righteousness on the earth.
The authority to bind and loose was given to Jesus and now He has given that power and authority to us. It is about the kingdom of God coming to be established on the earth. The keys are given to us for the sake of the kingdom, to bind and to loose according to the pattern of things in Heaven. “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”
By the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven we bind on earth and render powerless what is bound and rendered powerless in Heaven. We loose on earth what is loosed in Heaven and in so doing we further the Kingdom of God coming on the earth.
