Thirty, Sixty, Hundred-fold
”But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” Matthew 13:8
Though this is still an extravagant promise it does lend itself to a degree of measurable results. The intent, however, as with many other specifically quantitative references in scripture, is to suggest an immeasurable quantity, such as forgiving seventy times seven, or when asked to go one mile go two or hundred-fold as in Mark 10:30
“But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” Mark 10:30
Was it Jesus’ intent that we would have hundred houses, mothers and children? Probably not in a specific measure but that in addition to close family relationships we would have many dwelling places, many “brothers” and “sisters” and “mothers” in the faith in the Body of Christ.
The point of the promise is that we do not lose when we give as unto the Lord, sacrificing time with and even leaving relationships in order to fulfilling our callings in Christ to further the Kingdom of God in the world.
What we give or give up for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be restored in multiplied overwhelming measure and not just when we get to Heaven but here in our everyday lives on earth. We will be enriched and increased because of our faithfulness and we shall enjoy the fruit of our labors, thirtyfold, sixtyfold and a hundredfold (more than can be measured.)
