A New Meditation on Psalm 112 - Part 1
“…His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous…” Psalm 112:2-4
This is a promise to every believing father and mother who brings up their children in the way they should go, teaching and nurturing them in the knowledge of the Lord. Their children will be blessed. They will be honored with the favor of God on their lives. It is also a promise to the children for generations to come.
Those who have been blessed with believing parents can take confidence in God’s favor on their lives because of it. Those things they have been taught and seen demonstrated by their godly fathers and mothers will sustain them in life and lead them in the way of righteousness. Even the children who for a time seem to stray from the ways they have been taught, in due time God will bring them back. This is the message of the Prodigal Son. This is also a promise to every believer whose life is now in Christ Jesus.
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:2
“And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:29
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” Romans 8:16-17
“Wealth and riches will be in his house…”
Wealth and riches are promised to God’s people and the promises are found throughout the Scriptures.
“Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.” 1 Chronicles 29:12
“Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance.” 2 Chronicles 17:5
“A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked.” Psalm 37:16
“Length of days is in her (Wisdom’s) right hand, in her left hand riches and honor.” Proverbs 3:16
Riches result from wise stewardship and trust in the wisdom of the Lord. It is the reward of following the wisdom that comes from above. Wisdom speaks to us to direct our thoughts and actions toward success in this life.
“That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries.” Proverbs 8:21
Ultimately, it is not by might nor by power of skillful human hands alone that wealth and riches come. It, as with all things that mankind is given to enjoy, comes from God’s creative and gracious hand.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:17
“As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.” Ecclesiastes 5:19
“I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the LORD, who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel.” Isaiah 45:3
Men in their desire to get wealth and to be rich apart from God’s wisdom, grace and mercy, will choose the ways of the devil, treachery, deceit, robbery, oppression, fraud, theft and all manner of cunning lies and greedy pursuits to build themselves great treasuries of material wealth. They build great monuments to themselves, leaving the poor and the heavy burdened in their wake. They set their hearts on their wealth to keep them in luxury and enjoyment all the days of their lives, but they inherit snares, destructions and lusts that war against the body and the soul.
“A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 28:20
“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.” 1 Timothy 6:9
“Do not trust in oppression, nor vainly hope in robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.” Psalm 62:10
True wealth and riches that add to life and do not bring sorrow comes from only one source – God the Father through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
“The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it”. Proverbs 10:22
“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.” Proverbs 22:1
There is no reason to apologize for the favor of God which results in a good name and the acquisition of wealth and riches. The wisdom to keep it in perspective is also a gift from God. The warnings of Jesus concerning riches were not against having them but against trusting in them instead of trusting in the Lord. The true wealth is the wisdom to know the true source of it and how to successfully manage it.
Wealth and riches in the hands and management of the righteous is useful for the Kingdom of God. With it we bless the poor, with it we send those who preach and teach the Word to the nations. With it we offer up worship and adoration to God. How much costly perfume is too much to pour on Jesus’ feet in worship of God? How much money is too much to employ in worshipping God? How much ministry of blessing to the poor is too costly?
“He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, and He will pay back what he has given.” Proverbs 19:17
The poor cannot help the poor neither can the blind lead the blind. The unrighteous rich without God only hoard up for themselves what they ultimately cannot keep.
“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” Proverbs 13:22
The righteous who have riches and wealth are important to the body of Christ, not so much because of their wealth but because they are witnesses of how the blessings of God, small or great can be used to further the Kingdom of God and to offer to God the very best that we have in this world while we are in this world. It all belongs to God.
He created it and He distributes it as He wills that His servants will as good stewards of His house act in accordance with His wisdom to minister generously and lovingly to all the house of God, to the poor, the needy, the stranger and the slave, the children and foreigner that God’s great name may be glorified!
“The earth is the LORD’S, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” Psalm 24:1
Whatever and everything that was created was created for God’s purpose and His pleasure.
“For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.” [Message] Colossians 1:16
God’s pleasure is also in our prosperity. He enjoys it when we do well and receive the just rewards of our labors and more than enough provisions for ourselves, and a surplus to be able to distribute to others.
“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8
As a result, our worship of Him ought to reflect the joy and abounding thanksgiving that He alone deserves because of His majesty, glory, dominion and power, His unsearchable, unfathomable, uncontainable, immeasurable, always abounding Love, and His unmerited blessing and favor toward us as those He has brought from death to life by the blood of His Son by the way of the cross to stand before Him as true sons and daughters of the Most High God. Hallelujah!!! Praise the name of the Lord!!! Glory to God!!! Alleluia!!!!
“Let those who favor my righteous cause and have pleasure in my uprightness shout for joy and be glad and say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, Who takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.” Psalm 35:27
Shout it out loud!!!!
Let the Lord be magnified, Who takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant!
“Do not be seized with alarm and struck with fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom!” Luke 12:32
