From Gloom to Glad – Only Takes A Word

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." Proverbs 18:21

A few years ago I was dragging through a day, feeling despondent and rather lonely. There was nothing particularly bad going on, at least no more than the usual “stuff” for that time. But still I couldn’t seem to lift myself out of it and as the day progressed so did the despondency until by the evening I was pretty down.

Then the phone rang! It was a dear

friend I had not seen or thought about for a long time. He called to say he and his family were in town and wanted to stop by for a while. Suddenly, I was up and feeling energized and excited! I got up and started getting the house a little more in order and checking to see what I had in the house to serve them. In that brief moment life was restored and joy was back in charge of my mind and heart. The gloom was gone and I felt invigorated.

What made the difference? It was a word from a dear friend and the anticipation of a renewed fellowship. I knew within moments we’d be laughing and clowning around like we used to do and just having a good time together.

The Holy Spirit longs to fellowship with us in that way. God the Father desires to share just that kind of deep joy and heartfelt excitement in fellowshipping with us. And I believe that His primary way of doing that is the company of people, those we love and who love us.

“Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now…” Philippians 1:1-5

“For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.” Romans 1:11-12

Is there a friend or loved one you haven’t heard from in a while, maybe even years? It would do them a world of good just to hear from you today. Even better, if you can drop by and give them a hug and have some laughter together. Take them out for coffee or plan a time to get together just for fun. This too is being a blessing and the return on this blessing can be astounding.

You are blessed, so be a blessing.
