We Are The Light
“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light…” Ephesians 5:8
“Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.” 1 Thessalonians 5:5
As a child and well into adulthood, when I sang, “This Little Light Of Mine,” I always imagined the light as being something that I had, like a candle, not so much something that I was. But, the Word teaches that we as living beings are the light. We don’t merely have light, like we would have a candle. We are the candle. We are the illumination. In fact, as children of God, Who is Light we are the children of light and therefore we are of the same makeup, substance and nature of our Father, The Light of the World.
Everyone who is born again from above is a walking, breathing, speaking, being and doing light. If we could see with our natural eyes into the realm of the spirit we would see that each of us is illuminated with the light of Jesus Christ in us from head to toe. When we speak, sing, teach, preach and act in ways that edify, comfort, encourage, exhort, and inspire others as Jesus did, we shine just as He did to bring the light of the Gospel to the poor, the sick, the hungry, the imprisoned, the lost, the broken, the young, the old, the weak, the strong and all who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
So, as children of light we live our best by being who we really are in Christ to the world. Our light does not come from the world. It only comes from God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. The nature of light is that it is never a companion of darkness at all. It eradicates and dispels it wherever it goes.
As children of light we have a commission indeed and summons from God to shine to the world of darkness. In so doing we should not be surprised when those who hear us reject us and the things we say in much the same way that those who have been denied light for many days will hide their faces and resist opening their eyes when they are first brought to the light because the light in contrast to the darkness they have become accustomed to is blindingly bright until their eyes can adjust to it.
We also should not be deterred by their initial resistance to our message, but rather be patient to encourage and wait for them to see the things the light is illuminating for them to see that they will come to The Light, Jesus Christ and be saved.
“And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” 2 Timothy 2:24-25
