Darkness Can Never Overcome Light

“And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:5 NASB

“And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it].” John 1:5 AMP

Darkness is in the world. We see and hear about it every day. It’s the center of the 24/7 news cycles. It has been there from the time before the Garden of Eden was created. Its founder is the devil. He was the highest created Archangel, Lucifer the angel of light. He was created perfect, but he brought forth iniquity when he became lifted up in his own eyes because of his great beauty and sought to exalt his throne above God. In his rebellion he became the devil a fallen angelic being. All that is darkness in the world has its origins in him. His attempted coup of Heaven was put down by God, and he was cursed along with a third of the angels who were in league with him to overthrow the throne of God, but was cast out of Heaven and fell to the earth. See Ezekiel 28:11-19; Isaiah 14:3-19

But though he was on the earth he had no power or authority here. When Adam and Eve were created they possessed all power and authority in the earth under God’s rule. They were created in light and they communed with God in light until they disobeyed the only prohibition God gave them. That disobedience opened them to the world of darkness and at the same time transferred their authority in the earth to the serpent, the devil and death and darkness began to rule on the earth until the time of the coming of Jesus, the Light of the world.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” Isaiah 9:2

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

Jesus dispelled darkness wherever He went on the earth, by healing, by provision, by deliverance, by life from the dead. Lack and want of provision didn’t deter Him. He fed five thousand with five lovaßes and two fish. Death did not stop him. He raised Lazarus from the dead. Sickness, demonic possession, blindness, the lame, the deaf, the mute did not shake Him. He went about doing good and healing all who were sick and oppressed of the devil. See Acts 10:38

He was the Light of the world while He was here.

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:5

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

But now He has transferred that light to us. In Him is still light, but we now share in that light and we are light.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.” Matthew 5:13-15

Darkness could not overcome the light in Jesus and it cannot overcome the light in us. The light in us is neither intimidated nor fearful of the darkness, because the light in us is Jesus. The world may seek to suppress us, quench our spirit, dismiss our message and even kill us. But we cannot be defeated as the light of the world that cannot be overcome by darkness.

The greatest deception the devil has ever played on mankind is to convince them he does not exist. Those who are now driven by his spirit would seem to be gaining the upper hand in many areas of our lives but they cannot prevail. We hold the light and we must not be afraid to declare it, even in the face of certain opposition.

Light will always overcome the darkness
