Psalm 91 — In The Secret Place Of The Most High

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1 KJV

“HE WHO dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand].” Psalm 91:1 AMP

To dwell is to linger or remain fixed on a thought or idea over a period of time. To abide is to live in a place from day to day, continuing there with constancy and sureness. Dwelling and abiding are often used synonymously. However, there are subtle distinctions that can be made between them.

Secret places are places hidden from view for all but a select few who know where they are located. Hidden places are similar to secret places but different in that hidden places can be found. But secret places must be revealed. Hidden places can be discovered by probative searches but secrete places are not sought because to the one who doesn’t know them there is nothing to discover. To that one they don’t exist. Someone might say as kids often do, “I know a secret.” But until the nature of the secret is revealed there is no starting place for discovering it. But a hidden treasure is a tangible entity that can be known before it is actually found. Secrets on the other hand cannot be known until they are revealed.

Secret places of the Most High are the domain of God’s creative sovereignty, of His wisdom, knowledge and understanding that no man can discover on his own or by accident. They must be revealed. They must be illuminated by God’s sovereign will and eternal purpose and design.

The disciples walked with Jesus, listened to His teachings and saw the miracles He performed but still did not know Who He was until He revealed Himself to them. Jesus made note of the fact that even Peter did not come to the awareness of Who Jesus was on his own. It was God Who revealed it to him.

“And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 16:16-17

Until Jesus came all that could be known of God was limited to the revelation of the prophets and that knowledge was all about a time to come when the Son of God, Yeshua, the Messiah would be revealed. When Jesus came to earth as a babe born in a manger He was heralded by angels to the shepherds, saying, unto to them was “born that day a Savior, Who is Chris the Lord.” He is the Messiah and He has come to reveal the Father to the world, first to the Jews, then to all mankind.

Of Himself He said.

“All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.” Luke 10:22

The secret places of the Most High are the places of God’s domain and Jesus is our means of finding them so that we can dwell in them and be safe from all the works of spiritual wickedness and evil in the world. The true meaning and significance of the Word of God is like a treasure in a secret place where only those who have it revealed to them can understand and benefit from its meaning.

We who are born again by faith in Jesus Christ and are filled with the Holy Spirit have the source of revelation within us to know the things that are hidden in secret places from those who do know the Father.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus, it is the work of Jesus to the reveal the Father and it is the work of the Father to draw all men to Jesus.

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” John 16:13

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:44

For the psalmist the secret place of the Most High was hidden in a mystery that has now been revealed unto us. The secret place of the Most High is the presence of the Holy Spirit in us with the Word of God in our hearts that when we pray, when we sing, when we preach or teach, or exhort, or comfort or encouraged we do so by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us as we are encompassed by God’s Ministering angels to keep us in perfect peace as we keep our minds on Him.

“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” Hebrews 1:14

The secret place of the Most High is not a geographical location in physical terms. It is a place in the spirit realm that we can know and experience in the natural realm as a state of our hearts and minds that transcends our circumstances and surrounds us with the sure and secure presence of God. In worship God inhabits our praises. And where the Sprit of the Lord is there is liberty. His shadow is created by the close proximity of His presence. It is a metaphor for the fact that God is with us and involved in the fullness of our lives of things great and small. His Spirit is ours to abide in and to be filled with every moment of every day.

In His secret place there is also an abiding place under His shadow.

More on the shadow of the Almighty tomorrow.
