The Utter Defeat Of Our Enemies

“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.” Psalm 91:7-8

Dwelling in the secret place of God is not just a hiding place away from the fight, but it is also a source of protective armor and overwhelming offensive weaponry to wage war against the forces of evil, death and destruction in the world. With the shield of faith we quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one and with the sword of the spirit we pierce the very heart of the assailants of God, and His people. The thief may come to kill, to steal and to destroy, but He does not get to be unopposed and have all his efforts defeated by the Word of God, which is the Sword of the Spirit.

A thousand may fall on one side and ten thousand on the right from the ravages of the plagues and pestilences that may come, but it will have no effect on the people of God who have taken refuge in Him.

This and the previous verses (5 and 6) referencing the terror by night and the pestilences by day point to the judgments of God that will come because of sin on the earth at the opening of the seven seals in the Book of Revelation. Revelation 6-13.

In either case, whether by spiritual warfare that we engage in now in these days or by the righteous judgment of God for sin in the days to come, we are undefeated by the enemy and protected from the devastation of judgment to come.

Only with our eyes will we see the wicked rewarded for their deeds. In Isaiah 14 the fate of them is illustrated in vivid imagery.

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house. But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet. Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned. Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities. For I will rise up against them, saith the Lord of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the Lord.” Isaiah 14:12-22

The wicked shall be utterly destroyed and perish but the reward of the righteous shall be eternal life of joy and peace.
