Kept By the Angels of God

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11-12

This is one of the most often quoted verses in all the Scriptures. The devil tried to use it (though inaccurately) to make Jesus tempt God when He was in the wilderness just before He began His ministry of teaching and miracles.

“Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: “He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you,’ and, “In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ” Luke 4:9-12

But Jesus knew and understood its true meaning and implication.

The Psalmist wrote these words to comfort and encourage the hearts of every believer who had and has a part in the covenants of God. Surely, the angels of God were with Jesus throughout His life. We know of their presence with Him at His birth and the Scriptures tell us that even after the season of temptation in the wilderness they came to minster to Him.

“Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.” Matthew 4:10-31

Even He said of them that they were at His command at anytime. When He was being arrested and Peter sought to defend Him by cutting off the High Priest’s servant’s ear, Jesus rebuked him and said,

“But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?” Matthew 26:52-54

This is God’s keeping power in the life of everyone who trusts in Jesus Christ for Salvation. The Holy Spirit is in us and the ministering spirits (angels) are being sent to us to minister for us because we are heirs of salvation.

“Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews 1:14

They are all God’s servants that have been assigned to take care of us and to minister in the world now on our behalf.

And we all have been the beneficiaries of their work whether we are aware of it or not. I believe most of what angels do daily on our behalf goes unnoticed, but they are there and here with us everyday.

God has given His angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways. Lay hold of that truth and be assured of His power to keep us from stumbling and falling because of the stones the enemy tries to put in our way; doubt, fear, anxiety, anger, malice, strife, division, jealousy, envy, a sense of worthlessness, weakness, inadequacy, poverty, want, sickness, loneliness, debt, financial stresses, emotional highs and lows, and a host of things to get us to abandon our faith in God and live our lives beneath the victory God intended for us through the blood of Jesus Christ.

We will not stumble on these things, nor will we be deterred by them. The angels of God are present with us and all around us in every situation to shine the light of God on these things. By the Word of God in our hearts we know how to discern good from evil, to embrace the good and to avoid what is not beneficial for us. By the Word of God our senses are exercised to recognize what is of God and worthy of our attention and what is not of God and worthy of our judgment, avoidance and denouncement.

All our ways are before God and His desire and plan for us now only and always, is good things, health, wisdom, strength, understanding, discernment, knowledge, success and joy all the days of our lives. When we seek Him first all these things and more come to us.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Matthew 6:33-34
