“With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” Psalm 91:16
To live a long life has its virtues, but to live a long and satisfied life is what most, if not everyone, desires. Long life, satisfied life is promised to every believer who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, who abides under the shadow of the Almighty, who have made the Lord their habitation, who have set their love upon Him. Every day of that life will be accompanied by the salvation of the Lord.
What that promise means for us is that those whose lives are in Jesus will have the presence of the Lord’s salvation, His presence, His peace, His provision, His deliverance, His comfort, His Healing, His protection, His Wisdom, His goodness, His mercy, His grace and love all the days of their lives.
Now this is no promise that the Christian who is totally committed heart, soul and mind to Christ will never have challenges in life, will never see lack or know any kind of sickness or discomfort. Jesus never said our lives would be free from all bad things and only good things would surround us. On the contrary He said “…in the world you will have shall tribulations…” [John 16:33] but those tribulations will not overtake you or overwhelm you or remove you from the compass of His overcoming love and power. So, He, says, “…but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.” What He has overcome, we have overcome. So we can be of good cheer.
That is no light, throwaway statement. “Be of good cheer.” Not, just don’t worry, be happy in a Pollyanna kind of way, but rest with a cheerful expectation with high confidence that the overcoming power of God will manifest itself even in the midst of the tribulation, in such a way that it has no effect on you. Cheer is good, but Good Cheer is an even greater promise.
The satisfied long life is one filled with good cheer in good times in bad times in abundance and in want. Whatever the circumstance The Spirit of Lord says to us,
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10
