The sky is not falling, but it’s ok to look up
We all know the story of the boy who cried wolf. After falsely alarming everyone in the town again and again, they were unresponsive to him when finally one day a wolf did threaten. No one came to his rescue because they had been worn out by his previous false cries. Then there is the story of Chicken Little who was constantly crying, “The sky is falling, the sky is falling!” It was not then and it is not now.
But there is another side to this story. How should we respond to any threatening news about the future? Surely, none of us want to be caught unawares in a life-threatening situation. So, we need to exercise diligence and vigilance to be aware of what is going on around us but we should never become so alarmed that we become fearful or anxious.
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11
As you consider these passages of Scripture be alert to the Holy Spirit leading you in a deeper understanding of what you should do to maintain your peace of mind and confidence in the Lord in face of threatening news.
Hint: Knowing God is bigger
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God…” Philippians 4:6
“He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” Psalm 112:7
