Those Who Oppose Themselves

“And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” 2 Timothy 2:24-26

It is in the nature of every fallen human being to sin. Though it may seem hard to comprehend, every child that is born in the world is stamped with the DNA of sin since the time of Adam. Now no reasonable minded person would hold a newborn baby responsible for not acting like a mature Christian adult and neither does God. His grace covers us all from our birth. But at the age of accountability we must take responsibility for our choices right or wrong.

When we see and hear otherwise reasonable people acting and speaking in unreasonable and irrational ways, striving and quarreling, spouting vitriol and calling for violence against others without a cause or even for cause showing no regard for the value of human life or property inciting violence and anarchy, these are the manifestations of the unregenerate evil inspired heart that is given over to the same spirit that opposes God. And that same spirit causes men (humankind) to oppose themselves, to act and speak in ways that will eventually lead to their own destruction.

So why do they (we) do it. Yes. We all at some point in our lives have been guilty of at least thinking about or even speaking violence against another man, woman or child created in the image and likeness of God. When those of an un-reborn heart judge another person by outward appearance, when they spread evil rumors and bear false witness against those who disagree with them. When they harbor hate in their hearts for anyone, they scar their own souls and they oppose themselves. All these things begin in the thoughts. The more they meditate on them and hear them repeated in the news and in conversations with those who think in the same destructive ways the more they are inclined to be tempted to carry out destructive acts of violence or applaud those who do, and in so doing they become as guilty of sin as those who commit the acts. I speak here of the unsaved unborn again human nature.

“From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” James 4:1-3

God does not answer favorably prayers to destroy or judge someone for their sins born of their natural, broken, sin-ridden human nature. NO! He sent His son to die for that person. He did so for us.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

So when we hear the vile utterings of those who call for the death of those who oppose or challenge their ideas or political, religious, or social views, know that these are the utterings of the same spirit that opposed Jesus. In their ravings they are not aware that they are opposing themselves. Therefore, we must pray all the more earnestly and fervently for them. Praying that their eyes, ears and hearts will be opened to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to believe and receive Him as Lord and be saved, to be transformed by the renewing of their minds that they may receive life and that more abundantly, being born again not of corruptible seed (the DNA of sin) but of incorruptible (the DNA of Jesus) by the will of God. Pray!
