Wisdom and Discernment
For our benefit the Bible is filled with instances of people making both wise and unwise choices, and people who exercise discernment and those who don’t.
Now there are various kinds of wisdom and only one is true. There is a wisdom of man that he devises in his own heart apart from God, but this is wisdom, earthly, sensual and devilish, [James 3:15-16] because men desired this wisdom and chose to reject God’s truth, God gave them over to what they desire most, a reprobate mind, being wise in their own eyes they became fools. [Romans 1:22-23] So, too are all men today who consider their wisdom greater than God’s and reject Him as so much myth, fable and superstition. They are the superior thinkers and all men should bow at the feet of their hallowed genius. Foolishness!
True wisdom is the wisdom that comes from above. With this wisdom come purity, peacefulness and gentleness. It is wisdom that is easily understood, full of mercy and good fruits, without covetousness and hypocrisy and this Wisdom is spoken in peace by those who desire peace with all. [James 3:17-18]
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5
This is Godly Wisdom, the Wisdom that comes from above. It can only be known by the revelation of the Holy Spirit, because it is spiritually discerned. Jesus said, “My words are spirit and they are life.”
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:14
“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63
Now in order to have discernment it must be given from God. It comes by having our senses exercised by the Word of God. The more we know of and practice the Word of God the more acutely is our discernment developed.
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Hebrews 5:14
Women are more naturally well developed in this than men because they are more sensitive to spiritual things. This is also a gift from God.
God told Abraham to take the counsel of his wife, because what she was saying to him was God’s will.
“And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.” Genesis 21:12
Abraham’s was missing it but Sarah was tuned in with discernment to know the will of God.
Now by the Holy Spirit in every believer we have been given the spirit of discernment to know a matter and understand it if we listen to and heed the leading of the Spirit.
We have all heard this Scripture often quoted, “Eye has not seen nor ear heard the things that God has prepared for those who love Him."
”But as it is written, ‘Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.’ ” 1 Corinthians 2:9
But few have continued quoting the rest of the passage.
“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:10
What cannot be discerned by human agency, that is, by our physical senses alone, has been revealed to us by His Spirit.
Wisdom and Discernment come from God alone. And we all have access to them by prayer. Ask that you may receive that your joy may be full.
