Dividing the Eternal From The Transitory

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matt. 13:44

Dividing the precious and eternal from the illusory and transitory

Everything has some value to someone. Even trash has value to the destitute and hungry or the discerning scavenger who knows what to look for. And to some even costly things are but trifles. The fool thinks nothing of squandering great riches, while the poor man desperately clings to a tiny morsel of bread. Material things are necessary for this life and so we should not be ashamed to have whatever our honest labors and righteous endeavors can afford. With our resources we should always be mindful of the poor and use what we have to help to meet the needs of those less fortunate. And this we have known from our youth. But what are the treasures that should cause us to sell all that we have in order to obtain? What are the truly precious and eternal things?

First is the Kingdom of Heaven. To know the salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ and to completely rest in Him for eternal life is beyond value. Second, to be generous and loving toward others is priceless because it is the very essence of the nature of God. For God so loved that He gave. Third, to earnestly endeavor at the very deepest part of our being to be holy and free from sin, to know wisdom and to live before others in ways that reflect Godliness, This is a treasure unmatched in human pursuits. Finally, to be faithful to the end in all that we do to the glory of God is a treasure worthy of the greatest price.

“Father of all goodness and grace, Lord of all mercy and truth, God of all beauty and priceless treasures, thank You for the love that draws us to want to be like You. Thank You for Your kindness that leads us to repentance. Teach us Lord to treasure what is truly valuable, to know the difference between the transitory things that are perishing with the using and the eternal things that are worthy of our labor and earnest pursuit. In Your infinite wisdom, in the strength of Your infinite power You show us such mercy and grace. Help us Lord to be a reflection to others of the grace, the mercy, the wisdom and the strength You show toward us that the world will know You and the hearts of those who don’t know You will be turned to repentance and come to know You through the reflection of Your life in us. In the matchless, precious and eternal name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Thank You, Father, Amen”
