The Weapons of Our Warfare – Part 4
“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,” Ephesians 6:13-14
And this is our armor. Part 3
1. loins girt about with truth
2. the breastplate of righteousness
3. feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace
4. the shield of faith
5. take the helmet of salvation
6. the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God
7. praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit
8. watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints
By these we wage war in the spirit. By these we defeat the purposes of the devil. By these we stand with confidence and assurance in the Word of God.
Of all the spiritual armor, this is the only one that is both offensive and defensive. Offensive, because with it we quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Defensive, because it protects our arms and our torso in general. It can be raised or lowered to protect the upper and lower parts of our bodies and head.
Discouragement, criticism and disappointment are among the most frequently used weapons of the enemy to get us down. Add to that false accusation, distrust, envy, jealousy, strife, divisions, gossip, backbiting, pettiness, fear, frustration, anger, malice, ill-treatment, unfairness and host of other things that come to steal our joy and disrupt our peace. But all these are no match for the shield of faith.
With the Shield of Faith, we can stop the effects of all these negative things on our emotions, our energies and our general mental state of wellbeing. The shield of faith is effective in the context of the Word. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
Now the hearing by which faith comes is not just audial. Not just what we hear with our physical ears. That hearing is fundamental, and we must hear the Word physically in order to be empowered to HEAR it spiritually. It is the hearing of understanding that gives us the ability to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
The Word of God is our weapon against the words of sin and death. Jesus said, “My words are spirit and they are life.” All else are words of death. All the words of the world are founded in and proceed from sin and death. But the Words of Jesus are life giving and life sustaining. They are quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
We can’t avoid hearing the words of death, because they are all around us, all the time, because we are in the world. But we are not like the world in this important manner. We are in it but not of it.
“I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” John 17:14-16
We who are born again are not of the spirit of this world any more. We have been changed, reborn, not of the corruptible seed of men but of the spiritual, incorruptible seed of God. We are a new breed of creation. As we grow in the knowledge and understanding of the Word of God that Word takes root deep in our hearts and bears the fruit of righteousness in us and then out of the abundance of our hearts we speak.
When we speak God’s Words we dispel darkness and bring light to bear on every situation we encounter. Darkness cannot overcome light. Our shield of faith is filled with light and darkness is quenched in its brightness.
The wicked one can never defeat us when we speak the Word in faith and the boldness of confidence in the integrity of God’s promises.
We are not defeated. We are more than conquerors through the One who loved us.
