The Weapons of Our Warfare – Part 6
“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,” Ephesians 6:13-14
And this is our armor. Part 6
1. loins girt about with truth
2. the breastplate of righteousness
3. feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace
4. the shield of faith
5. take the helmet of salvation
6. the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God
7. praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit
8. watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints
By these we wage war in the spirit. By these we defeat the purposes of the devil. By these we stand with confidence and assurance in the Word of God.
The sword of the Spirit is the first offensive weapon. Its purpose is to destroy the enemy and render his works null and void. We do warfare in the spirit by the Word of God.
Though swords are often used for ceremonial or decorative purposes, the sword of the Spirit, that is the Word of God, is not intended to be wall décor or mere serve commemorative functions. It is alive and is quick, powerful and shaper than any two-edged sword. It pierces a body to the innermost core of its being even dividing the joints from the marrow and the soul form the spirit.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God and Jesus used it as a weapon against the devil and his temptations against Him in the wilderness.
Even when the devil tried to temp Jesus with a false notion of the Scriptures Jesus countered him with the spirit of the word not merely the letter.
“And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.” Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” Matthew 4:6-7
This too is our purpose in fighting the good fight of faith, to set things in order by the Word of God, to resist every temptation, and not only resist but render them completely destroyed by the Word of God, not by the letter but by the force of the Spirit through the Word.
“Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” 2 Corinthians 3:6
Now the sword of the Spirit doesn’t just pierce it pierces to the dividing asunder. That is dividing to the uttermost by force and separating into fragments even shredded pieces, with the idea that it can never be reconstituted again, except and only by God’s will and creative power.
All things in creation have been set in motion by the Word of God and will remain in motion until He determines to alter it. No man can change God’s design or purpose in those things He has reserved for His sovereign authority alone. The seas have not escaped their boundaries the wind still blows and the Sun, Moon and Stars continue in their orbit without variation or interruption, except by the will of God. Only in one instance for the sake of a man God caused the Sun to stay at a set point in the sky for nearly an entire day.
“And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.” Joshua 10:13
For three and a half years rain ceased on the earth at the command of God for the sake of the prophet Elijah.
“Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.” James 5:17-18
The foolish posturing, fearmongering and evil prognostications of men are no threat to God’s creation. The Word of God will stand forever. Heaven and earth will pass away, but God’s Word stands forever.
“And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. Daniel 7:14
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24:35
The sword of the Spirit, shall remain forever. The more of the Word we have at the ready in our hearts, the more powerful and effective our swords will be. Our warfare is not one of chance and probability but of surety and confidence in the certainty of God’s Word.
