The Excellency of God's Name
To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David.
“O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8:1-9
Simply put, this Psalm may be divide into three parts,
Part One: God’s all excelling name, His all transcendent glory and the power of praise He has placed and set apart for His glory even what emanates from the mouths of suckling infants that can stop the works of the devil (the enemy and the avenger).
Part Two: The vastness of creation and the dominion God has given to man over all of it.
Part Three: A restatement of the excellency of God’s name in all the earth.
God revealed Himself to Israel by many names and in each one He showed Himself excellent above all.
El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty)
El Elyon (The Most High God)
Adonai (Lord, Master)
Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah)
Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner)
Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd)
Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals)
Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There)
Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness)
Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You)
El Olam (The Everlasting God)
Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide)
Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace)
Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts)
All of these names were attributed to God as a result of His intervention in the lives of His people Israel and Jesus is the embodiment and the express image of them all.
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:1-4
“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” Colossians 2:9
And God has given Jesus a name that is above every name, that at that name every knee shall bow.
“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:6-11
Now that excellent name that is above all name is our point of entry, our word of authority and power to gain access to all of the resources of Heaven and earth that God has made available to us for whatever the needs are in our lives, by which we will glorify Him.
God is our God and that means He is our supply, our source, our very certain and inexhaustible provider of life.
Jesus tells us that whatever we ask the Father in His name He will give it to us.
“And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:23-24
God enjoys His children enjoying the prosperity and blessings He gives them.
“Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.” Psalm 35:27
