What About Today?
“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, and saw My works forty years.” Hebrews 3:7-9
We hear a lot of talk about the things of our lives set in the future. The sower sows for a future crop. Our spiritual growth and maturity is about reaching some future goal. Hope and faith are all about the future.
But, what about today? What is God saying to us today? We want relief today. We need provision today. We want wisdom and understanding today. We are geared toward desiring to have what we need now when we need it. We want to see the fulfillment of our desires today. That’s our nature. When we’re hungry today we don’t first think how we will eat at sometime in the future. We need food today, so we get about appropriating what we desire, what we need.
God is about today. Even His name, I AM, speaks to it. Today is not so much about us waiting for God, but God waiting for us. He is always on. It is our faith that needs to be awakened and engaged. It is our decision to open our mouths to speak and our hearts to believe and to receive His provisions for us.
The first challenge is to get quiet enough and focused enough to hear his voice. The other challenge is to resist giving into the pressures or the struggles of the moment.
In the wilderness Israel, away from the familiar world of Egypt, feared the unknown and put little trust in the words of Moses even though God continually through him, met their need, even supernaturally in the desert, bringing water from the rocks, manna from Heaven, and not allowing their shoes or clothes to wear out, providing a pillar of cloud to shade them from the sun by day and a pillar of fire to illuminate their camp by night. For forty years He provided their super-natural protection from their enemies and the promise of rest to come in a land that flowed with milk and honey.
Father, God and Lord, Holy is Your name and Your Kingdom rules over all on earth as in Heaven. Thank you for today, for all You are and all You do for us Your people, Your sons and Your daughters. Father, God, please open our ears to hear from You and our hearts to receive Your Life and that more abundantly. We pray that You will meet all our need according to Your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Save us from fear, doubt and unbelief and fill us with the peaceful and sure assurance of Your promises that we will know Your will today.
Give us the energy to carry on Your work with fulfillment and reward. Lord, please, do not let us be disappointed, because on You alone we depend for life. Give us the desires of our hearts that Your purposes and plans will be fulfilled. Strengthen our arms and our legs to stand, to walk, to run and not to faint, to do the work of ministry.
Bless us in our storehouses and increase them with an overflowing supply. Please heal our bodies and minds and give us the true joy and peace all around. Give us the wisdom to make wise decisions and wise choices. Bless us Lord that we can be a blessing, that we can be Your hands extended to the poor, to the needy and to those to whom You choose to bless through us.
Change our hearts, Lord to serve Your kingdom’s cause and bring glory to Your great name. Let Your love and Your Word rule in our hearts. Thank You Father, thank You Jesus, thank You Holy Spirit.
To You, Lord, be all the glory, all the praise and all the honor in the blessed, Holy and glorious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen
