Proverbs ¬– News From The Source – Part 5

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners there of. Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: Proverbs 1:10-20

The focus of most of the Proverbs is addressed to the young who are coming into adulthood. They are particularly addressed to Solomon’s son(s) as they were being groomed to ascend to the throne over kingdom of Israel as he was also taught by His father, David. More broadly they are addressed to believers throughout the generations to this day and beyond. Wisdom is not limited to time and place because it is based on truth that is immutable, unchanging forever. What was true in Solomon’s day was still true when Jesus came into the world and is true for us today and will still be true 10,000 years from now.

The wicked are always looking for those who will join them in their evil deeds.

They love to entice and lure the innocent into their snares. This is the way of every violent gang in our time and is the same spirit that drives cliques of girls and boys in grade school who join forces to oppress, intimidate and bully the weak, the shy, the insecure and the kids who are not privileged. They prey on the poor and the destitute to rob them of the little they may have or use and abuse them with false promises that leave them more destitute than before. They will lie, cheat, steal and kill on a whim. They have no moral compass to constrain them. Anyone joining forces with them are sealing themselves to their fate.

They promise is that all in the company of thieves will share in the spoils of their ungodly treachery, but in this they also lie. There are many movies that center on the theme of the gangsters who employ the services of a team of people to help them perpetrate their crimes but once they are no longer needed the ones at the top kill them and take everything for themselves, but even they end up being the victims of their own snares. Even if they escape judgment for awhile eventually they will be apprehended or will suffer a worse fate.

All things gained by deception and motivated by greed will ultimately come to naught.

A bird will not willing wait around while a net is set to trap them. The evil one lays traps for the innocent but in doing so they are setting snares for themselves that will take their own lives.

Now for most of us the snares are more subtle, more insidious and vicious in their approach. Plots to defraud the elderly, ponzi get rich quick schemes to steal from the poor and those ignorant of their devices, fraudulent phone solicitations and so on. We must constantly be vigilant to avoid being blindsided by their schemes.

We should never buy into those things, but we must also be alert to not fall victim to them either.

So the message here is, stay alert, be suspicious of sweeping clams of quick wealth, and avoid any and everything that even hints of manipulation and deception. This is wisdom to be discerning of the things that are true and those that are not true, knowing that God will judge the wicked in due time.
