Proverbs – News From The Source – Part 9
“For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.” Proverbs 2:6-9
The apostle James, the brother of Jesus wrote in his epistle, that
“…the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” James 3:17
He also wrote.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5
So, wisdom is not being withheld from us. It is not hidden in a mystery and locked away in a remote vault. It is not so complicated as to be only available to the most intellectually elite minds. No. Wisdom to us, is speaking unceasingly from the mouth of God. Every time you and I speak God’s Word wisdom goes out to the world. Every time the Word is preached. Every time a prophecy of truth from the Word of God is declared wisdom goes out to the world.
Knowledge and understanding come from God alone and He has in store sound wisdom for every believer (the righteous) who calls on Him for it. And I love this. He is a buckler for them that walk uprightly.
Buckler- a small round shield worn on the left arm to shield and protect: one who shields and defends; one who covers and safeguards
By wisdom God protects and defends the righteous, the believers in Jesus Christ on whom there is no condemnation because they do not walk after the flesh but after the Spirit.
What does it mean to walk not after the flesh but after the spirit? First, it doesn’t mean people who are perfect, people who never err, people who never offend in word or deed or people who are without sin. Those who walk after the spirit are those who recognize that Jesus is their righteousness, that they are dependent on and follow the leading of the spirit in their everyday life; that their earnest desire is to serve the Lord in spirit and in truth, they understand that God knows they are human, frail, earthen vessels (clay pots) who have been entrusted with the treasure of the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, teach and direct them transformational-ly to become like Jesus. When they are convicted of sin they are quick to confess their faults and be cleansed from all unrighteousness by the blood of Jesus.
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. John 1:8-9
Those who walk after the flesh, ignore the wisdom of God. They walk n their own standard of righteous behavior. They are self-centered, self-justified, self-absorbed, self- willed and are directed only by the dictates of the baser urges and passions. They tend to be without restraint, without discipline, without respect for God, His Word or His people.
“God knows the way for the righteous but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” Psalm 1:6
The Lord keeps the paths of judgment. He has established righteousness, truth and justice. He defines their terms and their parameters. Each has its righteous application in the way to we live our lives and each is essential to fairness, justice and the defense of the truth. God alone preserves the way of His saints, the manner in which we are called to live in a godly way in an ungodly world.
Only in the pursuit of wisdom from above, that is, Wisdom from God, can we understand righteousness and judgment and equity. Indeed every good thing and the pathway to it is revealed through His Wisdom.
