Proverbs — News From The Source – Part 10
“When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things, from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness; who rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of the wicked; whose ways are crooked, and who are devious in their paths; to deliver you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words, who forsakes the companion of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God. For her house leads down to death, and her paths to the dead; none who go to her return, nor do they regain the paths of life—So you may walk in the way of goodness, and keep to the paths of righteousness. For the upright will dwell in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, and the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.” Proverbs 2:10-22 NKJV
The Scriptures are not passive or evasive when making contrasts between good and evil, righteousness and wickedness, truth and lies, and so on. Here in the Proverbs particularly, almost every call to wisdom is accompanied by a reference to the reward for heeding the ways of wisdom and the judgment and ultimate negative result of ignoring it.
Wisdom must first enter the heart before it becomes an effective guide for our lives. Just talking about wisdom or verbally rehearsing it in some theoretical context only is of no profit if it is not also then employed in our daily living.
Where the pursuit of knowledge, learning and understanding are ridiculed or dismissively criticized, particularly by those who through threats and intimidation seek to prevent others from gaining it, the end result is chaos, unrest and every evil work of man’s degenerate sin imprinted soul.
Healthy children are naturally curious and eager to discover the world around them and then beyond as they grow and mature in knowledge and understanding. To quench or suppress from the heart of a child or an adult that natural God given gift of learning is cruel, despicable, reprehensible and worthy of the fullest extent of punishment for those who perpetrate that offense, because it not only robs the child or adult of the joy of learning, but it robs them of the tools necessary for pursuing full and rewarding lives. It condemns them to poverty and often, ultimately presses them toward crime and a sense of little to no value in life.
The pursuit of knowledge and wisdom has a cost. It requires of us the same things it also teaches us, discipline, steadfastness, sacrifice, hard work, patience, delayed gratification, consistency, determination, humility, perseverance, boldness, courage, strength, and submission to the Word of God. Along the way we also discover profound and immutable truths, Love, compassion, grace, mercy and faith.
Because all Godly wisdom is born out of God’s nature to love and show mercy and grace to us, we learn love, mercy and grace as the motivation for sharing the Good news of the Gospel with others.
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30
So the end, the purpose, the ultimate goal of wisdom is to impart the life and Spirit of Jesus to every heart.
Yet, there are still those who, even though they have been given every opportunity to grow in knowledge and wisdom, still refuse to pursue it, choosing rather to walk in the ways of indiscretion, of evil, perversity, indecency, darkness, wickedness, crooked dealings, moral corruption, being devious and deceitful, seducing the innocent and marking a pathway to death by every word of their mouths and every work of their hands.
But we who belong to Jesus Christ, our Lord, are called to a higher calling and purpose, and by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us we will“…walk in the way of goodness, and keep tothe paths of righteousness.”
Our destiny is to dwell in the presence of God, blameless and without shame as His holy people, the children of the Most High God, the body of Christ, His people whom He has made kings and priests unto our God. [Revelation 1:6]
This is the pathway and the reward of Godly wisdom
