Proverbs — News From The Source – Part 15
“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her.” Proverbs 3:13-18
Happiness is something we all want and we want it without measure. Given a choice for 50% happiness and 50% sadness on the one hand or the choice of 100% happiness on the other, I believe most of us would choose 100% happiness. We all know that life in our broken world will not be fully happy until Jesus returns. In the meantime we all seek happiness wherever we can find it; wisdom and understanding is our primary pathway to it.
Wisdom is to be valued above everything else we could desire of all the precious things the world values: gold and silver, rare and precious gems, things that hold their value over time and things that are the exclusive acquisitions of the super rich. All of it pales in value compared to wisdom.
Why? Because, no matter what earthly value human beings may give to stuff, none of it can bring or sustain life, none of it can bring lasting joy, none of it can heal sickness or give true peace of mind, none of it can speak a Word of comfort or satisfy the soul’s need for companionship and love. Yes, things can bring temporary pleasures, their value can be used for good, and their function can increase the quality of life we all would desire. Wealth can give provide many creature comforts and conveniences. It can bring help and desperately needed aid to the needy and the poor, but things are subject to changes that can be drastic and dramatic. By contrast, the wisdom of God is constant. By it wealth and riches can be gained and with it honor, pleasantness and peace.
Wisdom is a tree of life, that is, its fruits can sustain us and keep us in the ways and will of the Lord, so that in all things we will please Him.
“Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.” Psalm 35:27
