Proverbs – News From The Source – Reject The Seductress
“For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lay hold of hell. Lest you ponder her path of life—her ways are unstable; you do not know them.” Proverbs 5:3-6 NKJV
It is often beneficial in Bible study to have various translations of the Scriptures to reference; not that the truth is different in each of them, but that each offers a slightly different perspective or phraseology that helps us to comprehend the fuller meaning of the texts.
Here are four additional translations of the passage above.
“The lips of a seductive woman are oh so sweet, her soft words are oh so smooth. But it won’t be long before she’s gravel in your mouth, a pain in your gut, a wound in your heart. She’s dancing down the primrose path to Death; she’s headed straight for Hell and taking you with her. She hasn’t a clue about Real Life, about who she is or where she’s going.” Proverbs 5:3-6 MESSAGE
“For the lips of a loose woman drip honey as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil;but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged anddevouring sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold of Sheol (Hades, the place of the dead). She loses sight of andwalks not in the path of life; her ways wind about aimlessly, and you cannot know them.” Proverbs 5:3-6 AMP
“The lips of an adulterous woman drip with honey. Her kiss is smoother than oil, but in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, as sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet descend to death. Her steps lead straight to hell. She doesn’t even think about the path of life. Her steps wander, and she doesn’t realize it.” Proverbs 5:3-6 GOD’S WORD TRANSLATION
The warning to a young man to flee from any temptation to live a life of sexual promiscuity is not new. The risks of licentious behavior are serious indeed and have been witnessed by men from the days before and after Noah. Countless lives have been lost in early adulthood due to foolish decisions to follow the dictates of the flesh for a moment’s pleasure that only ends in destruction.
The works of darkness are real and the intent of the devil is still to steal, to kill and to destroy. But the righteousness of Jesus Christ that is rooted in the heart of the wise ones will not fail to protect and keep them from stumbling into the ways of the seductive woman.
The immoral, seductive, adulterous, loose woman is a metaphor for all those, men and women, who are not wise and lead their lives aimlessly, engaging in all kinds of recklessly behavior with no thought that they are on the pathway to hell. And it is more than that. It is a warning to every believer to be watchful in order not to be seduced by the wiles of the devil, because we are all engaged in a war daily that vies for our souls. Failing that, the same enemy seeks to ensnare our minds and our bodies with sickness, lack, want, aloneness, and the myriad of mental conditions from despair to depression and the like.
But, we are made of sterner stuff than he can comprehend. Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. None of the thief’s weapons fashioned against us will prosper. Every tongue that arises against us in judgment we will condemn for this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and our righteousness is of the Lord. He has declared it so.
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord.” Isaiah 54:17
In the wisdom and righteousness of God we have life and that more abundantly. In God’s wisdom we do not stray from the truth to the right or to the left. The wisdom that we have from God is from above and it is pure and unassailable.
“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” James 3:17
The spirit of the harlot has no place in us, because we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, having been washed and cleansed from all sin and iniquity through the blood of Jesus Christ.
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” Jude 24-25
