Arming For The Victory
“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57
Victory is the outcome (the beginning of reward) of overcoming what has resisted that victory. We wage warfare with enemy armies to gain the victory over them. We wage warfare with the best and most effective weaponry we can employ. Most commonly we hear the phrase, “Arm yourself for the battle.” And that is precisely what the wise soldier must do.
Now we know that in the world, we as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and as those who rely on Him exclusively for our salvation today and for eternal life in the world that is to come, our lives are lived in stark contrast to the brokenness of the popular culture’s worldview. In matters of faith, morality, justice, truth, righteousness, honesty, virtue and everything that drives our interaction with others, our compassion for the weak and the poor, our fundamental attitude of hope and ultimate victory in life, is buffeted by the works of God’s enemy the devil. It is he and his minions who are the ones with whom we are at war.
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in highplaces. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:10-13
Other human beings, no matter how offensive they may be in word or in actions toward us or toward the things we believe in, they are not our enemies. They are not the objects of our warfare. The war we must wage is with the spirit behind their words and deeds. That spirit is the spirit of lies, death, deception and every evil thing in the world.
That said, we all know that we deal directly with people of all kinds every day. Many of them are offensive to our faith. Despite that, they are people whom God loves and for whom Jesus died that they might be saved. Moreover, in the kind of warfare we are called to wage we are already victorious through Jesus Christ our Lord.
When He died on the cross taking on Himself the sins of the world, He defeated the devil who crucified an innocent Savior and by that act of murder he was defeated once and for all and we were made in that same moment victorious over him. Now, he has no claim on us. The blood of Jesus Christ has bought for the victory over death, hell and the grave for us. Now through the love of Jesus we are more than conquerors.
Where then is the need for our armor and what is the way of our warfare?
“Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13
We need God’s armor to stand in the victory He has gained for us.
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” Romans 8:37
Our victory is first and foremost in the spirit, what the Bible calls the principalities and powers, the rulers of the darkness of this world and the spiritual wickedness in high places. This is the realm of Satan’s work, wickedness, darkness, domination, cruel rulership and evil powers of death and destruction.
We arm our selves daily in order to stand in Jesus’ victory over all these things by our faith in Him, in the knowledge and power of His Word in our hearts and in our mouths. By it we declare toe the world from our hearts that Jesus is Lord of all.
“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1 John 5:4-5
So, every day we must arm ourselves to walk in the victory that we have in Christ Jesus our Lord, the true life, and that life more abundantly. We are, therefore, commanded to be clothed daily in the full armor of God, in Truth, in Righteousness, in Faith, in Salvation in Jesus Christ and in the Word of God with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.
We have the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. In His full armor we walk in that victory. And in all things we are then motivated by love to the end that we live the life of Christ in the world, that the world will know that Jesus is Lord.
