Whatever You Do Shall Prosper
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” Psalm 1:1-3
Much of the Scriptures are about instructing and encouraging our behavior to redirect us from sin to righteousness. We, all humankind, are naturally given to sin because of the fall of Adam. That revelation is one of the most important truths for us to possess in order to appreciate the true depth of the grace of God. Though some psychologists and those who profit from human sin would disagree and account most of all human behavior as simply natural and to be embraced and accepted as normal practice not to be judged or to flee from, despite mountains of empirical evidence to the contrary.
But, we who are called by the name of the Lord, who have acknowledged our sin and accepted the redeeming grace of Jesus Christ’s blood and death on the cross, gladly seek to know and live by His Law of life (in Christ Jesus our Lord) than to die in the wantonness of sin. Death is the reward for sin, but life and that more abundantly are the rewards of righteousness.
There is blessing for all those whose lives are not led by the counsel of the ungodly nor are they given to be associated in the company of sinners and particularly those who scornfully mock and deride the things of God and the people of God.
Who are the ungodly? They are those who refuse to acknowledge the truth of God’s Word. They live by the dictates of their natural human, sinful nature. They deny the truth of the God’s Word and they eschew the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus for the sins of the world. They mock God and hate His people. They may temporarily prosper in their way, but the end of their way is death —not just physical death, but eternal separation from God if they do not repent and accept the grace of God through salvation that is only found in Jesus Christ.
But, for those who delight in the Lord, to know and to do His will, living by His ways and seeking Him night and day, there is great promise of reward. Their lives shall be well established, drawing their sustenance from the deep streams of living water. “…the rivers of waters…”a metaphor for the Word and wisdom of God that comes from above.
And these waters nourish the godly man’s life so that in due season he will be fruitful. “…his leaf also shall not wither” is a reference to thedaily renewing power of the Word of God. Unlike the natural leaves on a tree that wax old, wither, die and fall to the ground, the one who walks in the counsel of God, and associates with godly men, the one who patterns his life after the ways of the righteous will be in a continual season of renewal, refreshing and replenishment. This man will prosper in whatever he does.
What a profound promise! Is it possible to prosper in everything we do. YES! It is a promise from God and it is true. The condition for realizing that promise is our choice to walk in the ways of God.
You and I are blessed as we delight ourselves in the law of the Lord, as we meditate in it day and night. We will prosper in whatever we do. And this is not a pseudo-spiritual boast but a declaration of faith and trust in the truth of the Word of God.
As true as is the promise of God that if we confess with our mouths the Lord Jesus and believe in our hearts that God has raised Him from the dead we shall be saved, so true is His promise that if we delight ourselves in Him and seek Him day and night, everything we do willprosper.
Now, God knows our humanity, that we are dust [Psalm 103:14]. He knows that even when our spirit is willing our flesh is often weak, so He has not left the work of our salvation or of our righteousness to us to secure on our own.
“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.” Isaiah 54:17
He has made our salvation as easy as possible. We only need to confess Jesus and believe. As for our righteousness, He has, of His own will, declared us righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. He has sent us the Holy Spirit to help us and by Him God is working in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure.
It is also true that we can delight ourselves in the Lord while we are still in the process of growing in His grace. While we are still learning to live above the dictates and weaknesses of our flesh we can still delight ourselves in the Lord. The more we delight in Him the less we will be given to satisfying the whims of the flesh and the more like Him we will become.
In this we can be confident. God’s Word will not return void, but it will accomplish what He pleases and prosper in the thing where He sent it. [Isaiah 55:11]
Therefore, dearly beloved, do not be weary in well doing. Remember we are in a fight for the souls of men, not for our own lives. We are already accepted in the beloved. [Ephesians 1:6]
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9
For those who earnestly fervently pursuing the righteousness of God, that is, those who are diligently, despite human frailty, faults and failures, continuing daily to seek to know and to do the will of God, especially as it pertains to the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Spirit of the Lord is speaking to you today saying, don’t be discouraged, keep your eyes on the prize. See in the spirit the realization of your prayers answered and the desires of your heart fulfilled. See yourself healed. See yourself strong in body and mind and confident in faith. See yourself more than abundantly supplied for whatever the need. Keep sowing good seed in good soil, keep praying, keep believing, keep confessing by faith, keep expecting God to keep His promises. You will reap a harvest if you don’t give up.
Yes, we are buffeted sometimes, and things happen that are not fair. Sometimes even when we’ve given our best, the short term result may look like things went from bad to worse. But hang in there. This present trial is not the end of the story. Yes, you’ve been believing, you’ve been praying and hoping for years and years, and you still don’t see any progress. Know this, what does or does not appear on the outside is no indication of all that is going on that we cannot see on the inside. Just keep doing what you know is right before God and be confident. He sees and knows exactly where you are, and in due time you will see your abundant harvest.
I began praying and seeking God for something in my life in 1977 when I got born again, and for something else in 1995. Since that time I have walked with an absolute assurance that I will receive both of these petitions in due time. I know that I will, because the same Lord Who saved me and healed me and delivered me and called me and anointed me for His service is the same Lord who promised me that He would give me the desires of my heart.
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
“Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” Isaiah 58:14
Have I gotten discouraged sometimes? Yes. Have I doubted sometimes? Yes. Have I been tempted to throw in the towel and just give up? Yes. But every time the Spirit of the Lord sends a blessing of encouragement to set me back on course and to increase my faith.
I’m closer now than when I first began to pray, I can’t give up now because He has not given up on me.
Likewise, we are confident in His Word because we know He loves us. And His love never fails.
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ…” Philippians 1:6
So, go for your heart’s desires. Stand fast in the authority and integrity of the Word of God. Whatever you do in Jesus’ name will prosper, because your counselors are those who love God, who delight in His Word, who stand in the righteousness of God, who sit in the seat of the wise and humble in heart in Jesus’ name. Your delight is in the law of the Lord and in that Law you meditate day and night. You are like a tree planted by the rivers of waters. You bring forth fruit in your season. Your leaf does not wither and whatever you do will, will, will, will, WILL PROSPER.
The joy, blessing, peace and prosperity of God be with you now and always in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. AMEN
