The Riches of His Glory Revealed

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:3-5

In every generation since the days of Adam all humanity has struggled to find peace and rest, to be free from agitating passions and the destructive ways of men against other men. Every generation has known its share of tyrants and evil agents of the devil who come only to steal, to kill and to destroy. So we should not be surprised or disturbed by the same forces of evil strutting about in our time, seeking whom they may devour. Thank God because of Jesus Christ, our Lord we are privileged like no other generation before Jesus’ birth, to have the power and authority by the work of the Holy Spirit in us and the Word of God in our hearts and in our mouths, to push back against the things of this present darkness and shine the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on them. In doing so we also point the way and illuminate the path to life and that more abundantly to those who grope in the darkness of sin, hopelessness, sorrow and death. [Ephesians 5:8]

“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.” Ephesians 5:1-14

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:13-14

With that in mind let’s consider today’s scripture.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

BLESSED= bles'-ed: barukh (Hebrew)

When used in reference to God the Word barukh(Blessed) means Praise, Adoration and Exaltation. It is both and affirmation of who God is and also a declaration of recognition to all creation that God alone is worthy of the highest praise, adoration and attribution of majesty, dominion, power and absolute authority over all things. That God is referred to, as “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”is an acknowledgement that Jesus was and is a man just like all humankind. His body, mind and nature (soul) are human. He was begotten of God, the Holy Spirit, by a virgin, a natural born woman. Thus, Jesus is both fully human and fully God. So, Jesus called on God as His God and as His Father.

“At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.” Matthew 11:25-27

“Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.” Revelation 3:12

It was God’s abundant mercy that sent Jesus to die for our sins that we could be forgiven and by Him made alive again with Him, when He was raised Him from the dead. We are made alive again because we were once alive in Adam before the fall. But after the fall in Adam we all died.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” Romans 5:12-19

But now through Jesus Christ we are all being made alive. Through His death, burial and resurrection He opened a pathway for us and for every man (male and female) to be delivered from the curse of sin that fell on all mankind (and on all nature) through Adam’s transgression. Even the very ground he walked on, all vegetation, every animal, every bird, everything that crawled on the earth, all that is in the sea, every living creature fell under the curse of his sin. [Genesis 3]

Now all creation waits in the travail of death and decay, groaning until the sons of God are revealed, that is until Jesus returns to restore us to wholeness, our bodies transformed from mortal to immortality, and all things in creation transformed to the righteous and eternal order we had at the creation of the world.

“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.” Romans 8:19-23

With Jesus’ resurrection we became heirs to everlasting life and all the riches of Heaven with God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we are being preserved for that inheritance while we tarry here on earth awaiting His return in power and great Glory to reveal and declare to us the fullness of our salvation.

This is the meaning of the profound revelation and declaration in the Scriptures that we see here in Paul’s prayer in his letter to the church at Ephesus and to us.

“Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” Ephesians 1:15-23

Though we cannot fully see or even comprehend the fullness of God’s riches laid up for us in Heaven, we are confident that they will be revealed to us at the appointed time. At that time the riches of this world will fade into obscurity by comparison to the fulness of the Gory of God that will be revealed to us in Heaven.

This is our hope and our confidence sealed by the Holy Spirit in us and firmly grounded and established on God’s promises that will be fulfilled in their time.
