Lent – Day 34 — The Pure in Heart

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8

The prophet Jeremiah characterized the human heart this way. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9

If our hearts are deceitfully wicked, then this blessing could not include us. But it does. Yes, the unregenerate heart, the heart of the unbeliever who has not yet been born again is indeed deceitfully wicked. But those who have been born again of incorruptible seed by the will of God possess a new heart, a pure heart, given to them by God. The pure in heart are those who have been granted righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ.

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26

There are, therefore, now two men of differing hearts.

“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.” Matthew 12:35

The heart is the depository of the things that identify who we are. If our heart belongs to the world then it is full of wickedness. If we belong to Christ then our hearts are filled with good things. We feed on what is good and we nourish our hearts and minds on those things that please God, obedience, faith, love, compassion, mercy, grace, forgiveness, sacrifice, self-denial, patience, graciousness, self-control, Godly discipline and restraint, kindness, wisdom from above, generosity, encouragement and the like.

“Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.” Titus 1:15

Our purity as believers comes from the Word, more specifically, from the washing of the Word. The Word of God when read, believed and applied to our lives has a purifying effect on our thoughts and our actions. The more we know and believe of God, the more like Him we become. Jesus Christ is the ultimate expression of purity. He knew no sin and He perfectly pleased God. As our knowledge and faith in the Word of God increases, so too does our transformation to become like Him in all our ways.

His heart becomes our heart, His thoughts become our thoughts, His ways become our ways and His purity becomes our purity.

We are the pure in heart because God has made us so, through the blood of Jesus. And we are blessed because we will see God.

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:2
