With Signs Following
“And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” Mark 16:20
“And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:3-5
If the Gospel of Jesus Christ means anything it means that the lives of those who believe and receive it are dramatically altered for the good forever. With salvation through faith in Jesus Christ we receive the mind of Christ. That is, beyond salvation from sin and death, we also receive the ability to see things as they really are and to discern between good and evil, and between the false and the true. With the mind of Christ we know that God is for us not against us. With the mind of Christ we resist evil and seek the good. With the mind of Christ we can love our neighbor as ourselves. With the mind of Christ we can love our enemies. With the mind of Christ we can walk by faith and not by sight. With the mind of Christ we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
The Gospel, when preached, should result in signs following and in the demonstration of the Spirit and power. Something ought to happen when the Word is preached. When the disciples were sent out two by two to preach the Gospel they returned reporting how even the demons were subject to them. [Luke 10:17] They were commissioned to preach the Gospel and to heal the sick, raise the dead and deliver the captives.
“And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff… So they went out and preached that people should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.” Mark 6:7-13
Now, Jesus has also commissioned us to go into all the world [Mark 16:15] and preach the Gospel to every creature with the same intent that with the preaching there will come a demonstration of the Spirit and power of God to heal, to deliver, to save and yes, even to raise up people from the dead.
“And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:7-8
Is He not the same God, the same Lord, the same Spirit and power? Are we not given the same commission, the same authority and the same promise? [Matthew 29:19-20]
And should we not expect, and should we not see the same results?
I believe by faith the answer is a resounding YES, and AMEN!!
