It Won’t Just Go Away. You’ve Got To Do Something.

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:22

Sometimes when it comes to matters of life that are just overwhelming to us, there is a tendency to think, if we just ignore them they will go away. Maybe as little children Mom or Dad told us that to comfort us when we had a bad dream, or when we would be afraid of one thing or another. And maybe we thought if we just pull the covers up over our heads and roll up into a tiny ball in bed we’d be safe until the trouble passed. For a two, three or four year old, safe in the care of Mom and Dad, that might have worked, but as adults we don’t enjoy that luxury. Well…not exactly.

The Word does tell us that unless we become as little children we will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. But, it also said, “…be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only.”

And the scriptures also teach us,

“… henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.” Ephesians 4:14-16

We are exhorted in matters of spiritual warfare to “…put on the full armor of God…” and to take our stand and not be moved, but with the shield of faith quench all the fiery darts of the enemy, and with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, we are called to pray with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit for all the saints. [Ephesians 6:10-18]

Our primary action before, during and beyond the things that come against us, is to pray and declare the Word of God over ourselves, over our families and those we love, over our friends as well as our enemies. Nothing is so powerful that it can prevail against the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man. That prayer avails much. That is the kind of prayer that God heard and answered when Elias prayed and the Sun stood still in the sky and even moved backward. [James 5:17-20]

“And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the Lord: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.” 2 Kings 20:10-11

Now this is not to say that you or I are responsible for moving the Sun forward or backward to demonstrate the power of our prayers. We are however, given authority to pray over the things that concern our lives and by our prayers and words of faith resist the evil works of darkness. We are called to be light and salt in the earth, to be examples of faith and reflections of the life of Jesus in the world. We are called to be different in our words and our actions. Doing so, we bring a deposit of Christ’s presence into every situation where we are, to make it easy for people to distinguish us from the voices of the thief, the murderer and the destroyer in the world. Our influence can be far reaching, far beyond what we might think. But, every Word of God spoken in faith releases God’s power to affect change in the world.

There are many things God has given and equipped us to do to live, and to be empowered to affect change in our world. We are not helpless nor are we ill-equipped to deal with whatever comes our way.

What we cando to effect change in the world begins with what we are saying. Are we professing the things of God or are we so filled with the “news” of the day that very little of God’s Word is readily in our hearts and in our mouths? If our words are God’s Words we can overwhelm the enemy of God with the truth of God. Jesus defeated the devil in the wilderness with, “It is written…” Whenever the enemy tempted Him He responded by speaking the Word of God.

The Word of God is our power weapon of offense against all the evil works of darkness. Nothing in this world can withstand it, particularly when the people of God rise up as a might army to stand for the truth and not be moved or shaken.
