The Unstoppable Church

“The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.” John 12:19

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18

"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.” Isaiah 54:17

God did not establish His Church to be a museum or an observatory.

Great museums house the art and artifacts of great artists, sculptors, painters, architects and inventors of all kinds of things of the past and some of the present. They serve an important function in the preservation of human heritage and storing the unique and rare examples of its highest creativity and imagination. They serve as places where history can be remembered and displayed from one generation to another. But the museum can only preserve a slice of a moment of creativity in the past. Its works can inspire and often do. But it is not alive nor can it give or sustain life. In the observatory on the other hand we can see just a glimpse of the vast expanse of space, we can see stars and planets even galaxies beyond our own, but that is the limit of our connection to it. Our observation cannot produce or sustain life.

If the church is merely a museum, a place to see and hear about the past exploits and miracle of the ancients then it is no wonder it has little to no life giving effect on the world in which it exists. If it is just an observatory where we hear of Heavenly things and spiritual matters too profound for us to comprehend, then we are merely spectators without a purpose or meaning to our existence. We are then bystanders watching life unfold around us with no power, authority or influence to move it one way or the other. It is a fait accompli (a done deal) so to speak.

But the true Church of Jesus Christ is a dynamic force for life and good in the world. A force so powerful that it breaks down walls and barriers that hold people in bondage to sin. So powerful that the weapons of the enemy cannot penetrate its defenses [Ephesians 6:16]. It is the body of Christ, filled with Holy Spirit empowered people, whose words, actions and faith can potentially reset the course of nature, despite it having been so cataclysmically altered from the day of man’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden.

Jesus did not come to the earth to put a rubber stamp of approval on the sins of mankind. He came to dispel all evil and bring light to those who grope in darkness. He did not come to put His imprimatur of grace on the very things that God revealed to be an abomination to Him in ancient times. He did not go to such great lengths to give and establish the Ten Commandments only to have them morph into the “Ten Reasonable Suggestions” that He won’t hold against us if we break a few here and there. He did not send His Son to die for the sins of the world only to have the world go on sinning without impunity as though the blood of Jesus were a free pass without consequences for men to live their lives in all kinds of life debilitating behavior and immoral, degenerative and unethical dealings with others, because it feels good. He did not send the Holy Spirit to His Church just to give us the occasional feel good goose bumps in the midst of some highly emotion ridden preaching or musical experience in church or church-like settings just to have all that emotional heat dissipate and become nothing in the face of real world challenges.

The true Church of Jesus Christ is on the earth with one great calling and commission to preach the Gospel to every creature and make disciples of all; to live the Gospel in love and humility with compassion and grace, to talk about it, to experience it, to seek it out and embrace it as life and to know through it the power of God to save, to heal, to deliver and to transform the lives of every man, woman and child born in the earth.

The Church of Jesus Christ is here to live and mirror the life that Jesus lived as one man to the world. As He is the express image of the Father [Hebrews 1:3] we are to be to the world the express image of Him. As the Church, those united in Christ, we can do the things He did, not as just One Man, but we can do all those things and even greater things as millions of people from every tribe, tongue and nation going about doing good and healing all who are sick and oppressed of the devil. [Acts 10:38]

We are stronger, better, more powerful and more like Jesus together. Indeed we are better together! Together we are unstoppable.

When we are together no power of hell can prevail against the Church. When we are together the world will come after us as the body of Christ, the same way in the Roman world in Jesus’ day the people came after Him, to receive healing and deliverance, to be delivered and set free from sickness and death, the same life we have been so freely given.

If we are really wiling to hear it and admit it, the reason Jesus was so effective and powerful in His ministry in a world where the culture was sold out to sin, (Ancient Rome ruled by the Caesars) where wickedness prevailed among the least to the greatest, where the poor were sorely defrauded, oppressed and abused, it was because He was not at odds within Himself or with the Father and the Holy Spirit. They were One – being and doing life together.

Oh, that we would be one with Him now as He is One with the Father.

This was His prayer before He left the earth to return to Heaven and sent the Holy Spirit to abide with us as He was with Him on the earth.

"I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.” John 17:9-11

As one with Jesus and the Father, filled with the Holy Spirit we are the unstoppable church.
