Our Words Make A Difference

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” Proverbs 25:11

Have you noticed how much you look forward to hearing from people who are positive, and their conversation always seems to lift you up, make you laugh, encourage you or give you a sense of peace? I’m not talking about people who go out of their way to be chummy and fill you with flattery or pie-in-the-sky fantasies. No, I mean, just good friends and loved ones who seem to know where you are and they somehow have the right words to say at the right time. Sometimes even strangers can “make our day” in surprising ways with words fitly spoken.

Conversely we all know how negative speak can change our mood or force us into an emotional and physical posture of defense against them. They can foster fear and anxiety, and host of other reactions that have a direct effect on the brain chemistry in our bodies and therefore produce strong feelings that can negatively impact our health and sense of wellbeing. Words have power.

When we speak, the words we utter are released into the atmosphere. Our words are not just sounds that fall off into oblivion beyond the point of dissipating in to silence. Our words are spiritual forces in the spirit realm, particularly the words of God, His covenant promises, prophecies and declarations of the Holy Scriptures. When we speak the Word of God, those words have the power to activate things in the spirit realm that force things in the natural realm to conform to them. Jesus said, “The words that I speak to you they are spirit and they are life.”

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63

Contrastingly, words that are not Jesus’ words are also spirit but they are not life. They are death. Where does the power reside? In the tongue, in what we say. Hear what the scriptures say.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21

Have you noticed how much of popular secular speech is rooted in images of death and destruction?

Here are a few that we hear all the time and maybe some that we ourselves have said:

This or that thing is making me crazy...

That just thrills me to death...

I’m just dying to get this or that or

I’m dying to go here or there or

I’m dying to know this or that...

That is so good, it’s just sinfully rich...

This or that thing is killing me...

This or that is to die for...

That just blew me away

It just blew my mind...

And these are often in reference to things we desire or in which we find pleasure. The negative hyperbole is intended to emphasize the effect of the subject on us by the intensity of the imagery. There are also those glib references to the things we don’t desire but we accept as inevitable, not realizing we can change things by what we say. Some have become engrained in the minds of otherwise well meaning Christians.

For example:

No good deed goes unpunished...

Good guys always finish last...

If you stick your neck out you’ll get your head chopped off...

Ok. We think of them as just hyperbole or just things people say that they don’t literally mean. The problem with that thinking is the words don’t make such a distinction.

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36

As a culture we are steeped in negative, death dealing speak. And we think it strange or odd to speak the opposite. But the opposite is precisely where life is.

“...as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; Romans 4:17

Imagine God looking at the void of the world and the expanse of darkness in the beginning and saying, “Ooowee! It sure is dark! It would probably have stayed dark from then on. But instead, He saw the darkness and said, “Let there be light!” or more literally, “Light be!” And light came into being.

We too can call those things that are not as though they were. Our Heavenly Father has given us that authority. Remember what Jesus said.

“For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.” Mark 11:23

We can speak to any situation or circumstance in our lives and call that into being which is not as though it is.

Try these on for size.
Instead of saying this or that thing is making me crazy... we say what we really want have happen, “God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power of love and of a sound mind.”

Instead of saying, thatjust thrills me to death... we say, That fills me with the Joy of the Lord and a merry heart that does good like a medicine.

Instead of saying, I’m just dying to get this or that or dying to go here or there or dying to know this or that... we say, “I have great expectation and hope in the Lord that in this or that I have good success and will enjoy great pleasure in it. ”

Instead of, That is so good, it’s just sinfully rich... we say, God has given me all things freely to enjoy. And nothing shall by any means hurt me.

(For the record, the devil had nothing to do with making chocolate. That was God’s doing and His alone. So give credit where credit is due.) Glory!

Instead of saying, This or that thing is killing me... we say, No weapon that is formed against me shall prosper. Instead of This or that is to die for... we say, “This is worth living for...big time!”

Instead of That just blew me away... we say, “That was astounding, amazing, awesome, wonderful, terrific, fantastic," any number of adjectives that don’t speak death to you.

Instead of It just blew my mind... (See above)

Instead of No good deed goes unpunished... we say, “Every good deed I do as unto the Lord, has reward for me in heaven and results in blessing and favor for me here on earth.” (See 2 Corinthians 9)

Instead of Good guys always finish last... we say the righteous always triumph over evil and God is making His people the head and not the tail above only and not beneath. [See Deuteronomy 28:1-14, Psalm 1]

Finally, instead of saying, If you stick your neck out you’ll get your head chopped off... we say, “I do not fear because God is with me.”

“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

"For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand,
Saying to you, “Fear not, I will help you.’” Isaiah 41:13

What impact could we have on ourselves, our friends and loved ones, over our communities, our churches, indeed over the world if, unlike those permeating the air with evil, we become those who counter the noise of sin and death with Words of life that will bear the fruit of life and good for everyone?

Here are some we all ought to be speaking to ourselves all the time.
