Partakers Of The Divine Nature
“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” 2 Peter 1:1-4
In the beginning we were all created of the substance of the earth, of dust, but made in the image and likeness of God and sharing in His divine nature. From the beginning Adam and Eve, male and female, were an image of God on the earth. They shared in His authority, creativity and godhead. But since the day they sinned and disobeyed God they and everyone born from them have been marked with sin and a curse of death.
Now the nature of all mankind is rooted in sin. But, we have through Jesus Christ the means of being restored to our first nature with God, such that we can once again be partakers of His divine nature. And we attain His divine nature by the agency of the exceeding great and precious promises He has given to us.
“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” 2 Corinthians 1:20
Now the record of the promises of God are given to us throughout the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. Over the next few days we’ll explore just a few of the promises in each book of the Old and New Testaments.
We know that because we are Christ’s we are also Abrahams’s seed and heirs to the promise God made to him, which He confirmed in Isaac and Jacob, and fulfilled all in Jesus Christ. So, in Him we also receive the fulness of the promise.
Here are just the beginnings of The Promise.
God has promised us to be blessed and to be a blessing.
In making covenant with Abraham and His Seed after Him, God, through Jesus Christ, The Seed of Abraham, also made covenant with us. So what was said in blessing Abraham is also said to bless us.
“And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Genesis 12:2-3
“That in blessingI will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which isupon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. Genesis 22:17
Our new nature as Christ’s beloved possession is to be blessed and to be a blessing. We are the blessed and we are a blessing. Our numbers are immeasurable, and our name is respected and honored because we represent Christ in the world. All those who bless us will be blessed. Those who curse us will be cursed. As the Church of Jesus Christ we are hear on earth to bless the world with the sweet aroma of Righteousness in Jesus Christ our Lord. Our enemies cannot get the advantage over us and all the nations of the earth are blessed by us because we obey the voice of the Lord our God.
While we, the people of God, the Church of Jesus Christ our Lord, are here on the earth we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. And in us dwells the fullness of the Godhead, Jesus Christ. The light of Christ is emanating from us to the world. By the love we show to one another we exhibit to the world that God has sent Jesus Christ into the world and He is now alive from the dead. The world is blessed through us because the Gospel is being preached throughout the world and everyone who hears and believes is being saved.
“For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10:13-15
How desperately poor and destitute this world would be if there were no ones here to proclaim the Gospel? Nowhere would the voice of hope be heard. Nowhere would there be the Word of forgiveness and restoration. Nowhere would there be anyone teaching the promise of Heaven and eternal life after death. Nowhere would there be any message of the transforming power of God. Nowhere would there be joy born of deliverance from sin and death. Nowhere would there be the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Nowhere would there be the message of healing beyond the limit of man’s knowledge. Whatever is impossible with men would simply be impossible. Nowhere would there be the God inspired inventiveness that has for centuries brought man from the dark ages of ignorance, illiteracy and hedonism into the light of the glory and wisdom of God.
But thanks be to God for the sake of His love for the world we are here and we are blessing all by the presence of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit in us. Though some, even many in this present age do not acknowledge us as a blessing they are nevertheless being enriched by God’s presence with us.
We are blessed and we are a blessing. That's our new divine nature.
