Blow The Trumpet – Sound An Alarm

“Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.” Joel 2:1-2

Among those who read the Bible regularly and study the Word of God there are many familiar with the book of the prophet Joel, particularly chapter 2 beginning at verse 28 as it talks about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the last days, about prophesying, about dreams and visions, about sons and daughters coming into the fulness of the work of the Holy Spirit as a sign of the culmination of all things.

But there are not many who are as familiar with the opening verses of this chapter which speaks to alarm the people of the coming judgment of God upon the earth, when all things that rest in wickedness will be destroyed.

The warning comes to stir the people up and awaken them to the reality of how far they have fallen away from their God, how deeply they have immersed themselves in the sins of this world and forsaken the covenants of God. It is the desperate heart cry of the prophet who sees the horror of judgment to come and with everything within him he pleads with the people to repent and return to God before it is too late.

But God is merciful even to the worst of sinners if they will not harden their hearts and turn from Him, but turn to Him in humility and seek His forgiveness and repent.

There is a stirring in the hearts of many believers today that we are now on the brink of something cataclysmic occurring in the realm of the spirit that will significantly impact our natural world, and the initial signs are very disturbing. Recent studies reported on TV news and commentary programs, and in Christian publications such as Christianity Today, reveal that church attendance among those 35 and younger has dropped by more than 50% in the past 20 years. The values of those in their 20s and 30s are radically different from their parents and grandparents, but not in a good way. Their social and spiritual sense of righteousness has been, and is being formed, by an ever increasingly secular hedonism that places more value in things and feelings than any word of truth that they and their pears dismiss as old fashioned and irrelevant to their lives or their futures.

They tend to be more inclined to believe the latest social media postings or broadcast media reports than the Bible. Institutions, traditions and true world history are of little value to them. As a result they are easy prey for the false, anti-God, anti-church and anti Judeo-Christian teaching about God and Jesus Christ purveying the airwaves and the Internet.

Have you noticed that of all the many religions of the world the one that is the most criticized, vilified, demeaned and subjected to ridicule is Christianity? Why is that? Because the devil knows it is the only one that is true and the only one that expresses the will and work of God through Jesus Christ the Savior of the world. It is the only name by which men, all mankind, must be saved.

For this reason we must be watchful and vigilant, not only for ourselves but also for those who are coming after us.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” 1 Peter 5:8-10

We are distinguished from the world by our identity and relationship to Jesus Christ. Not the “Jesus” of the secular media who is often misrepresented and accused of all kinds of evil for which He is not guilty, nor the “Jesus” of the ambitious politicians, who manipulate and deliberately skew His Words to fit their corrupt social agendas.

No! We are the people of the truth, people of the day and not of the darkness of this world.

“You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do,but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.” 1 Thessalonians 5:5-10

We must make every effort therefore, and seize every opportunity to speak the truth in love especially to the young and those who have never heard the Word or experienced the life saving power of God through faith in Jesus Christ. We must not fail to pass along our history, our story to the next generation.

Midst the din of Godless rhetoric swirling around us daily there must also be the penetrating sound of the alarm to call those who belong to Christ to be alert and ready for spiritual battle daily and to hold fast to the truth as we have received it by faith and confirmed it in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

How Great Thou Art and You Raise Me Up

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:23-25
