The Glory of The Promise
“And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them: And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.” Deuteronomy 28:13-14
The summation of all these overwhelming blessings is the promise that the Lord will make His people leaders, decision makers, governors and administrators, that they will be under no one’s rule or dominance. They would be the rulers and never slaves. But all this would only happen if they would be obedient to all His laws, to observe and do them. Finally and most importantly was this. They must not turn away from God’s commandments one way or another, to add to them or to diminish them. Nor should they follow the ways of other gods, to worship them. They must never give themselves to the promotion of, advancement or exaltation of other gods before the One and only true God.
For them the condition was clear and direct. You keep the Law you will enjoy overwhelming blessing and prosperity. You transgress the Law then all the curses mentioned in Deuteronomy 15 – 68. The measure of the curses encompass all the plagues and diseases that were known in Egypt during their captivity but even greater and more devastating sickness and plagues that they never knew would come upon them and their generations after them, and the slavery they were delivered from in Egypt they would be returned to without the unifying shared experience of being a people in bondage they would be scattered abroad and never know their families or have any identity with the covenants of God again.
Now what does all this mean for us? We know the covenants of blessing were intended to be the shared inheritance of God, by the sons of Jacob, (Israel) as a people and us, the believers by faith for salvation in Jesus Christ alone.
“And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.” Hebrews 11:39-40
“Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.” Romans 4:16
So the blessings are ours to enjoy with them. But what about the condition of obedience to the Law? Praise God! Jesus is for us and for every believer the end of the Law. We are now subject only to the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus.
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2
Therefore, we are free from all the curses mentioned in Deuteronomy 28:15-68. And any disobedience to that Law would not be charged against us since that law has no claim on us. What then is the condition by which we can obtain the promises of God? It is simply this. FAITH.
The just shall live by faith. We please God by faith. We are saved by grace through faith and we are justified by faith. We are sanctified by faith. We speak by faith. We walk by faith and not by sight. The blessings, the promises and the covenants of Godly glory are ours to enjoy by faith. And that faith is not inaccessible or unattainable. It is as present with us as the mention of the name of Jesus from our hearts. In that name is all the fullness of God.
“For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell…” Colossians 1:19
“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily…” Colossians 2:9
Above all God wants us to know His fulness, to dwell in it and to declare it to the world, to be filled with joy and life more abundantly such that we overflow with the goodness of the Lord into the hearts of others, and they become filled and overflow into others who will become filled and overflow, multiplying again and again until all the world knows that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The means of our mission is faith. The power of our mission is love. The object of our mission is the world, every soul. The pathway of our mission is grace, the grace of God to work His will through us though we are mere mortal beings, earthen vessels, into whom He has deposited the treasure of His glory. That is the glory that shines in the face of Jesus Christ.
“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” 2 Corinthians 4:6-7
We have this glory now and by it we shine the Light of Christ Jesus our Savior and Lord to the world.
