Where The Spirit Of The Lord is There is Liberty
“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” 2 Corinthians 3:17
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:2
Indeed God is Spirit. His presence is uncontainable, and He is all-present. There is nowhere He does not exist.
“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou artthere: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” Psalm 139:7-12
So when the Scriptures says “where the Spirit of the Lord is” it is not intended to convey the idea there is any place where the Sprit of the Lord is not, but rather, that those who are born again have an awareness of His presence in such a way that it brings them freedom from the constraints of the old law, with its ordinances and ceremonial demands. They are free to have joy and hope for the present and the future, freedom to worship and to pray directly to the Father, with the assurance of being heard. The presence of the Lord with them is the sense of knowing they are free for the penalty of death, hell and the grave and that they have eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is salvation, healing, provision and peace. Liberty is freedom and freedom is the natural and intended state of man from the beginning. God did not create man in bondage or servitude to anyone. He enjoyed absolute autonomy to choose whatever he desired, to live as he pleased and to commune with God as one made in the same image and in the same likeness of God. He was a spirit, free from any limitations to his imagination or creativity, except for one thing only. In the vastness of all creation he held dominion and unfettered authority over every living thing on the earth except the single tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In this one thing only he was commanded not to eat of it.
Our Declaration of Independence confirms that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Freedom and Liberty are from God and we who are born again by the Spirit of God are once again given the joy of living in it as we acknowledge the presence of God with us. God is with us because Jesus has promised never to leave us or forsake us even to the ends of the earth.
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Deuteronomy 31:6
“…and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:20
Because God is with us we have liberty now and in the world to come eternal life.
